:1val: Thanks Beth, I have been gone since early morning of the 1st and was shocked to see this. Later, I am going to dig to see if Dr. Sharpe said anything about it. I kept watching and watching for Cholyn's 2nd egg and after several days had decided she was only to have 1 this season.

:newegg: Meanwhile at about 1836 last eve, Cruz laid her 1st egg at Fraser Point. While I am disappointed Cruz did not go with Jim the Bachelor who had maintained this nest alone for almost a year, I am happy for Cruz and Andor (Jim's brother from the next season after Jim hatched). Jim the Bachelor and Andor's father is Cruz's brother. So Cruz is not only Andor's mate, but his aunt. Congratulations Andor and Cruz!! Many followers are thrilled for Cruz after losing Spirit last season and that the old Frazer nest is in use once again! I am unsure how many seasons Spirit and Cruz used the new FP nest after abandoning this one.

:7val: Really hoping all goes well this season for Jackie and Shadow at Big Bear. They had a confirmed pip on 3/2/22 at 1547!! Nice view of the pip with movement at 1326 today. This afternoon temps are in the 50's, then tonight they have a "winter storm warning" with snow accumulation expected to be 6-8 inches at nest elevation over the next day or so. Lows overnight this weekend will be in the teens.

:hatchegg: at 1614 for Big Bear with Shadow on duty!! Jackie came in several minutes ago and after much talking, beaking, etc she finally stuck her foot under Shadow and he got up and Jackie sees her chick for the 1st time and settles over it and the remaining egg!

3/5/22 - from Facebook Redding CA
"We are so sorry to announce we lost one of our 3 eggs last night. It appears to be #1. As eagles age, their shells can become thinner. There was an indent spotted at 22:46 last night. We waited until daylight to get a good look. We will continue to watch the remaining two eggs and rejoice come PIP time. We are still looking for March 20 as PIP watch. -Julie--"

:7val: Possible pip @ Big Bear, waiting to see if they confirm...or not.

Edit to add at 1:25 am, They have said nothing and I have not been able to see that part of the egg for many hours. So, probably not a pip.

:loveheart2: Akecheta #61 was on duty for the hatching and is a first time Dad! Very endearing to watch him. He tries to assist the chick out of the shell and keeps checking on it. At some point, it is obvious Thunder is standing over him and wants to come on duty, but he isn't having it and they have several beaking spats. You can watch the fun from 5:43-6:26 when Dad finally leaves the nest. The cam goes to highlights and freezes some, so I am unsure how she finally got him up. He continued to hang around the nest working on sticks to stay as long as possible and I think he was going to try to take over one more time, immediately before he flew, but thought better of it. Thunder did not seem amused during any of this. I don't know what time he normally arrives in the morning, but I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up a little early.

Edit to add @ 9:30: Video by Cali Condor:

:flirty: Akecheta arrived at 5:41 this morning for Dad duty. They alerted and a few minutes later Thunder got up and Dad got his chance. Thunder left for break.

Dr. Sharpe will have an impromptu Q&A at 11:30 am Pacific today (3/11) regarding bald eagles. I will answer the questions on the IWS Chat page (https://www.iws.org/iws-chat
) so that there is a permanent record, but will monitor the West End nest YouTube page (

:7val: :hatchegg: :hatchegg: :hatchegg: For the West End nest of Thunder and Akecheta @ 19:34!!! Akecheta was not there, so he will be beside himself with joy in the morning! Saw him feeding one of the chicks while she was feeding the other earlier this evening. Hope they continue to do more dual feeds. The older chicks have done some bonking, but so far I have not witnessed anything ugly.

:loveheart2: Thunder heard something (as did I) at 1:33 am. Seconds later, Akecheta arrived at 1:34. She alerted as did he and am unsure if she started the alerts because Akecheta flew in unexpected or if it was otherwise. Shortly when Akecheta walked around her, he noticed broken eggshell beside her. He dug around a bit and finally dug under her. She got up and Akecheta took over brooding his 3 chicks. She went to sleep with her head tucked nearby. He continues to brood as I leave.
