:15heartbeat: It seems Jak and Audacity may have stopped incubation awhile ago after dark at Sauces. Will have to see how it plays out overnight. Audacity has been trying to give it up and seemed to want him to also, but he wouldn't.

:15heartbeat: Well, it seems incubation continues. Audacity spent the night on a tree nearby and they left the cam on that tree all night. At dawn, from this view you could see part of the nest and the tip of Jak's tailfeathers. Have no idea if he came back last night or just before dawn. He incubated all day except for a couple hour break. She did come in for a few minutes to incubate, but the egg was mostly alone during that time. Incubation continues tonight.

We are planning to band at the West End either Sunday (4/24) afternoon or Monday (4/25) morning, depending on weather and travel conditions.

We are going to head out towards the West End and should be there between noon and 1 pm, if everything goes to plan.

:flirty: Results from West End banding yesterday. Bands are orange. The females orange band is on the left leg and federal on the right. The males orange bands are on the right legs and federal left. These are correct as I saw Dr. Sharpe confirm the sex and band #s of eaglets #1 and #3. Results from the West End nest banded yesterday:

CamOp MIBDave Mod • 6 minutes ago
I believe this is correct:

25/D, the largest and probably oldest bird is the female.
23/D is the middle hatch and is male
24/D is the youngest bird and is a male.

:15heartbeat: Yesterday at the Two Harbors nest of Chase and Cholyn their only eaglet was caught on Mom's talon and as she lifted to fly off the nest the eaglet tumbled out of the nest and down a steep slope that drops down to the ocean below. It landed several feet down and was able to land in an area and not fall further. A concern for the overnight other than it falling further was the Island Foxes. However, the eaglet did make it through the night and continues to be in the same spot. Dr. Sharpe and crew are enroute to make a rescue attempt. Dr. Sharpe placed the cam in the position he wants it for the rescue. Here is a video of the tumble by Deb Stecyk:

"Eaglet Falls Off Nest - Trapped on Dangerous Ridge - Rescue Planned - April 25, 2022 - Two Harbors"

Screen capture from this morning of the eaglet by im_ann.

Dr. Sharpe and crew have shown up per overlook cam in the area. SC by Gracie Shepard.

At 10:33 PDST the Two Harbors cam is panning the rescue area. Can see the shadow of a parent flying back and forth.

10:37: Can see crew at nest.

Hoping the chick remains in place and does not get spooked and attempt to escape when it sees Dr. Sharpe. It has made several attempts to climb upward since incident yesterday. I saw one earlier this morning and it tumble backward some. Very scary!

:10sum: Mission accomplished! Eaglet is placed back in nest by Dr. Sharpe at 11:01 PDST!!!!

Short video by Explore of incident and eaglet rescue:

"Operation Eaglet Rescue | Bald Eagle Chick Returned to the Nest"

Long video showing the incident yesterday and today's rescue by Dr. Sharpe and crew. Video by Cali Condor:

"Dr. Sharpe & Crew Rescue The Two Harbors Chick & Build New Nest Rails Explore.org 2022-04-26"

One of the chatters shared some of Dr. Sharpe's comments during the rescue: "Dr. Sharpe Quotes...1st locating the eaglet he said at the cliff.. "Stay still chicky" Then as he began to descend, said to the assistant, "watch the ropes in case something goes terribly wrong, as I hate it, when things go terribly wrong"....... lastly, while checking out the eaglet and about to put back in nest said, "I'll be back in 3 weeks!"....... I love him!"

From FB, 21 photos and screen captures of rescue and the eaglet after rescue before parents arrival.

Chase ( with a "flying fish") and Cholyn's return to the nest about 3 hours after eaglet rescued and placed back in the nest. Cholyn fed her eaglet right away. Video by kathlene m:

"TH Eaglet Parent return (post rescue) 4_26_2022"

Parents have been making up for lost feeding time. Screen capture by Gracie Shepard:

Check out the eaglet's crop from 17:20 this evening several hours after the rescue.

Chase has continued to deliver fish to the nest since the rescue. At 19:30, Mom is standing next to 3 nice size fish on the nest while the eaglet sleeps...

What a day, night, day...Cheers to Dr. Sharpe and his crew!

SWINWK and Beth! Thanks for bringing all the Two Harbors rescue info here! :flirty:

Glad Dr. Sharpe & team decided to intervene even though this was not caused by humans.

:eggthumb: Thanks Gigi, I'm going to take this and put it with mine later. Hahaha! Was wanting more screen captures. I didn't know they had FB or don't remember. I watched a tv interview with one of their local stations. He talked about how important these eagles survive, because they only have 8 on the islands. And I think that is why he rescues even though not human caused.

The remaining two eaglets at the West End nest have been named by donors that adopted the nest. Male 23/D is Sky and Male 24/D is Ahote (means restless one).

Ahote is the youngest eaglet that was rescued by Dr. Sharpe after sliding off the rock.

Thanks! I noted this info on the Eagle nesting calendar.

:15heartbeat: Another eaglet out of its nest:

From IWS FB:
"Another week and another bald eagle chick out of the nest. We went to band the Lopez Canyon chick on Santa Rosa Island today and found that its nest tree had broken off at the trunk and slid down the hill. The chick was found healthy about 50 m up the hill from where the nest had been. We built a temporary nest and placed the newly banded chick (Male 22/D) in the nicely shaded nest. The new nest is only about 15 m from where the chick was found, so the adults should have no problem relocating him."

"Broken tree trunk with the nest tree broken on the ground in the background."

"The downed Lopez Canyon nest."

"The Lopez Canyon chick after about 12 days on the ground (tree fell the morning of 4/19 according to trail cam photos.)"

"The temporary nest we built."

"Male 22/D back in a nest after banding"

:15heartbeat: Believe it or not, incubation has continued for the egg at Sauces primarily by Jak except during the night at least the last couple for sure. This morning an island scrub jay broke the egg. Jak came in and incubated it anyway. Then early this afternoon, Jak left and the egg has not been incubated since. We'll see what tomorrow brings, this may be it. SC by Janntonne:

Egg at Sauces after broken by scrub jay early this morning. Poor Jak...

Edit to add: Jak came back in at 21:48 and laid down in the nest bowl, but the egg is beside him. Then he got up, looked down at the egg and in a bit he flew at 22:37. So may be not quite done... SC by Janntonne:

Jak back in the bowl.
