I found this about the Altamont Pass, CA (from March 2009) and the biologists that "fought city hall" and won. . to a certain degree. .

Very interesting video

And a 2011 follow-up article

There is also a video with this article. . the video includes banding golden eagle chicks (they are huge)

Like you said, a victory, sort of. Thanks for the follow up SGB.

Thanks for the video. I've read the information about a change in the turbines at Altamont Pass, but we are still getting birds at Lindsay Wildlife Hospital. These are only the birds that are clinging to life. We don't get the dead ones.

Beans, it was not my intention to minimize the issue, I just started researching what could be done about this.. and. . .

OMG. . I've been reading more stuff. .. and while wind turbines are deadly, apparently they don't compare to other hazards. .

According to the American Bird Conservancy, it is estimated that anywhere from 10,000,000=154,000,000 birds are killed yearly from power lines, 4,000,000=50,000.000 from towers. . I could go on and on. . :tissue:

We've always had crows in our yard. They come around when we put out the peanuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds for the squirrels. I saw two juvenile crows (they have pink mouths). These may be two of the three I brought home from the wildlife hospital and released into my yard a few weeks ago.

Last month a gull with a plastic bag wrapped tightly around his neck was rescued and brought to International Bird Rescue in Fairfield, California. First, the bag was carefully removed by Marie and Kathy. Then the gull was placed in a warm water pool to swim around. He was removed and Marie got a good look at his feathers. She separates them, looking to see whether they were waterproof (and his skin dry). Last part of his rehabilitation was a transfer to the Pelican Aviary and Spa. Two huge pools and plenty of fish. Heaven!

Here is a picture of a Pied-billed Grebe who swallowed fishhok. He was also rescued and treated.

Love your stories of rescue, rehabilitation, and especially, release beans. The crows are a riot. I am always entertained when they visit my yard, juvies screaming! Oh your choice of music was perfect!

Perfect "crow" music,Beans. . made me chuckle. . I had no clue that juvie crows had pink mouths!! I'll have to watch for that since I have my share of crows (they wipe out my suet!!)

Great rescue stories. . I wish humans would be more aware of what they throw away. .

I noticed the gull was banded. .did the rehabbers band him or did he/she come in that way?

Last week, Redondo Beach Animal Control arrived at International Bird Rescue’s Los Angeles Center with a California Brown Pelican in desperate need of assistance. A fishing lure was hooked not just to the side of her face, but to her wrist, such that any movement of her head or wing would tug at the wounds on each. All three barbs on each end of the lure – six barbs in total – were embedded into the Pelican’s flesh and had to be snipped for extraction. Judging by the advanced parasitic state of her facial wound, with a huge opening below her eye and around the hinge of her jaw, she must have been in this heartbreaking predicament for several days before being rescued.

The lure removed, and her wound flushed, the Pelican, now called 1473, was started on antibiotics and stabilized. She then underwent surgery to remove necrotic bone and tissue in her jaw area. She was eating again that very night! With such a large wound to close, her rehabilitation at International Bird Rescue will be a lengthy one, but this bird is a fighter. She is alert, feisty, and has a big appetite. Once her wounds have healed and she demonstrates an ability to fly with strength – and therefore hunt for herself – we anticipate that she will be released back into the wild.

DITTO I know sometimes line/lures/hooks can't be recovered right away but dam it anyway if people would just pick it up even if its not their own then these things sure wouldn't happen as much. Yes I get pissed easy these days SORRY
