Great videos beans! Its tough having single orphans. In Virginia we post on a statewide listserve to look for a companion when we have singles. Its so much better to have two or more. How nice that you have so many great facilities for rehabbing. I love that pool area they have!

I've been to several classes on fostering. So nice when it works! Canada fosters falcons successfully.

About avian wounds:

From a distance, it's difficult to identify a wound on a bird. Sometimes all you see is an indentation or break in the feathers.

If you would like to read a short abstract on wound protocols, click here: Wound Assessment in the Avian Wildlife Casualty

This will give you an idea of how we assess and care for avian wounds in the wildlife hospital.

From the website:

great black backed gull (Larus marinus)

"Anaesthetised great black backed gull (Larus marinus) with barbed fishing hook lodged in the cervical oesophagus and penetrating through to the outside. The hook was well hidden by the bird's dense feathering and only detected following palpation of the neck."

As gigi said, tragic.

Kitten, what I found most tragic in the video, more than the Eagles resorting to the dump to survive, was the Starling trapped in the tree. Open dumps are not acceptable, environmentally, for many reasons, very dangerous!!!

Now that we are waiting for Dad Sidney to be captured so he can be examined, I would like to address stress management for wildlife in captivity. This information is based on the training I've had in two wildlife hospitals and confirmed in the research I've read.

Both capture and captivity cause extreme stress in wildlife. Not only have they lost their freedom, they are in a strange place, and they are being handled by humans. The captive bird (or other wildlife) will produce more glucose for energy to cope with the stress. To accomplish this, its body starts breaking down other tissues (proteins and fats). Over time, the animal goes through its store of glucose, and then it starts breaking down muscle tissue.

I hope that those who aren't part of the capture team will stay away. An audience of well-meaning admirers will simply add to Dad Sidney's stress.

The Lindsay Wildlife Museum hospital (Walnut Creek, California) received 35 animals last week, bringing the total for this year to 253.

Many mammals are looking for denning sites now that spring is almost here. Nocturnal mammals such as raccoons, skunks and opossums are looking for places that are dark and quiet during the day--attics, crawl spaces and under decks. Make sure your crawl space and attic vents are secure to prevent wildlife families in your home.

I volunteered at For the Birds of Indiana today. You may remember them as Magee's rehabbers after he got himself in a pickle and was rescued from the ground on I-65 a few years ago. Also one of last year's chicks was named Hatton after Chris and Liz who run For the Birds of Indiana.

Well, long story short. On 2 occasions this last week Liz and Chris received calls from downtown workers who witnessed our favorite tiercel, Kinney, defending his territory from a Coopers Hawk and then a Red Tail, taking them both down. The Red Tail ended up on the roof of the HIlton [or was it the Sheraton...] and when rescue was attempted, he flew off [Hooray]. The Coopers Hawk landed on the parking garage at 31 S. Meridian. He was successfully caught and brought to For the Birds of Indiana. No injuries, except to his pride, so after a few days Chris released him on the grounds of the nearby Eiteljorg Museum. He said the birds scattered as the Coopers Hawk high-tailed it in the opposite direction of Downtown. I think the hawk thought he better get out of Dodge before Sheriff Kinney made another arrest attempt!
