Chick was by itself, though not for long. Mom came, sniffed him, observed him, and brooded him.

I looked back to see if the little one had been fed, and came this interaction between dad and the chick.
Poor baby. It apparently has 2 parents who didn't know that eggs produced chicks and not food. You might not want to watch this cause it shows the dad knowing the he's got to feed the little one, but not knowing how to do it. The little one is sleeping and he wants to feed it. It's educational... Mom returned shortly after the video ended.

She eventually got some food in him. It took a while--she made him walk over to her! :egg13:

thanks Nancy

Gords impression to events here

My impressions:

The Spook – This looks like she was dosing and something (my bet one of the local ravens) flew right by the box and surprised her. She was looking hard and out from the box. If someone had been on the roof she would not be able to see them from her position. A good illustration as to why we always give them warning when approaching the nest – they often incubate with their toes under the eggs. If she had bolted out from the box she would have carried the one egg out with her!

First Egg – Egg eating at hatch has been observed at anytime during incubation both in the wild and in captivity – some individuals (males and females) can do this more than once. The fact that so much yolk was visible on the first one suggests that something may have been wrong with the egg (unretracted yolk sac?) – there should not be that much yolk in the egg or body of a full-term chick. We saw this type of thing quite often with thin-shelled eggs during the height of the DDT years (photo attached).

Second Egg – Quite possibly the male (as a first time breeder) got confused after the first instance and started messing with a pipped or hatching chick and ended up eating the second one.

I would bet, if the female is on the last egg for hatch, she will bring it off and she will not eat it. If the male is allowed on during hatch, anything could happen. It would be nice to see them bring off at least one young.

Bit of a bummer, but with the cams we see all sorts of intimate behaviours – good and bad. Sure hope she gets the last egg hatched.

Great vids, Nancy...and thanks for posting Gord's response, Bev!! I'm still holding my breath...

Early morning. Mom's got the right idea..still needs to work on aim. I think the baby got a few bites..hard to tell...but gonna remain cautiously optimistic!!

I watched every bite . I think about 3 at every feed. Severe headache from watching.
As soon as wee one can grab , things should be ok.
Male did cover chick for a wee bit. Things seem to have kicked in for him.
He is bringing prey, smaller than the big pink birds( :girlcrazy: )

So I am hoping for success.
I think our problem is, we have always had at least one experienced bird at all our sites. Now we have two( green) ones.
So if this turns out, we will chalk it up to learning. We are being educated here
But my poor head . :tantrum2:

I am so grateful for all that are keeping track, tough as it is .

Little one seems to want his dad to feed him. His dad's looking around for a tidbit to feed him, apparently.
