U of AAt 13:47:55 on September 3rd, it seems that a strange female came here. Its feathers look very new. Sorry, I don't know how to post pictures here.

Thank you Hoshinow. Great video. That was a young female . Skinny, probably looking for food.
When male came in he chased her out. You could hear them.
Good catch.
It is about this time our falcons start readying for migration. This young one, probably passing through and checking things out.

This is a new younger pair at U of A this year. Our other female , who was here for 15 years usually left for migration first or second weekend in October. Our male usually left a week earlier. Sometimes even earlier.
This morning, I was down at U of A site and adult female was on cam and adult male on ledge below nestbox.

I am so glad you joined us at the site. Your observations were very helpful

catching up.
A few developments since last report.
our adult female had not been seen at box since morning of sept 5 .
Peter and I went down to check on things Sept 10 and stayed for about 2.5 hours( we only saw one falcon on pillar above box. it flew off north east, came back and did so again. I t landed on another pillar on CS roof to right of where it was previously. ( peter will download camera but pictures not great) . At first we thought female but looking again we thought male.
- so where is the female .
Well Gord posted a note on Sept 12. that he had the adult female from U of a . now it all makes sense

Howdy All: Just a heads up. I have the adult female from the U of A blocked out in my backyard at the moment. She was rescued by WildNorth from the 68th floor of the Stantec Tower - perhaps the most expensive falcon trap ever made! She bounced off the windows several times, cracking her sternum. Remarkably, she did not break any limbs. The plan now is to keep her on a block (hooded) and minimize her movements for a least a month. If she makes great progress, we may be able to bust her loose in October. If not, we will overwinter her in a large outdoor pen, wait for her male to return to the U of A in spring, and release her to his care (courtship and all, he should feed her right away). I will keep updating on her progress.

What a sad year. Joy turned to saddness a few times.
but I like this years female and I am hoping she makes a good recovery and return here next season. Gord is very hopeful. She is on antibiotics, and is a huge bird. ( I will post any updates here)

I sure miss her here. she made great strides and was a great mom.

male was missing all day may12 but on may 13 , he turned up in early evening. He was agitated , in and out a bout 6 times .( while he was gone we had a few magpies an d pigeons and 2 ravens visit box. one raven brought in a pigeon egg( right front corner of box)
Janice went down that evening ( may 13) and had 2 peregrines in her sights . male was on Cp building and another falcon ( maybe female) was on southeast CS . The other falcon flew off west and hopefully is gone

the other falcon has not been seen on cam and I am hoping it is gone. The male , at times, does some talking, but I am thinking just birds passing overhead.
I am hoping this other falcon is just passing through so that our female can claim nest next year.
So today , May 15, the male was in a few times and looked quite relaxed. I think the day he was missing, he was looking for his female

Here is the interesting thing
just after noon on May 5( last time I saw our female at box) , I captured on tape a big falcon attacking our young male at Bell . I had mentioned to Peter, I wonder if that is our female( not really giving it another thought) . Gord said , she was probably scouting around , as they do, at seasons end and spring, seeing if there was a better site. Bell is considered prime to falcons( not to us, but they like the height of building) . He said she would want to chase off any young ones. We know they do this. We have seen it before. . our youngster was smart and stayed on ledge but I thought a few times, he would get nailed. Why this makes sense is that the Stantec building is a huge skyscraper right behind Bell building. Bell adults probably came in and saw this happening and gave chase. the building is all shiny glass. and our female , not knowing area, woul d easily hit that glass, in attempts to get away. ( I was there at my daughters today, and went to count the floors to see where they found her. )

soon the male will be preparing to leave. I will be gone from Sept 18 till end of month, but I will take ipad with me and If I hear anything about our female , I will post here

the young female Peter and Janice had ot rescue here, is being flown by our top falconer.( teaching her to hunt) they think she has some delayed development. but we will hope it works itself out

Bell Sept 15

i posted videos in post before this one. they are enjoyable to watch. Put them on theater mode.

I had seen or heard our male every day till SEpt 11. so I thought he had gone. the adults started making more appearances to box and perches. Now they were both being on ledge at same time more often
But on Sept 14. there he was
I posted video in post above and it was fun to watch him playing around and fly hopping all over. adult male was on box, being as quiet as possible as youngster played. This young male has been quite good and has not really bothered our adult too much. I heard him often at south end, and did not see him but sure heard him by mike

Dr. court sure did great by this site. He has taken all but one male last few years and we have had success. Males have better luck here with all the glass buildings. And with one, they are not goofing around . they seem to concentrate more.

I will post all the bands here tomorrow of all sites but Genesee. I will post theirs at their site

The new female reappeared after being absent for two days. The male frequently returned to the nest. (Female appeares at 13:48 and 18:45 of the video).
