Typically Dutch ?

There is not a mill in this village, I do not walk on wooden shoes, I do not wear old costumes (and I know nobody in my area who does) and I like to eat cheese, but prefer the French ;)

:laugh2 You're too funny, marjanne! But you didn't mention tulips, one of my favorite flowers . . . I hope you have some of those in your village. ;)

Tulips????

I love flowers, but the tulip is not my favorite.
I have no tulips in my garden and I've never visited the "Keukenhof"
(Now I'm really beginning to doubt, am I a Dutch woman? ;) )
Lily-of-the-valley and the Gentiana are my favorites 8-)

With your garden in mind, I was wondering how cold it gets there in winter?

Hi Tine. I'm glad you found this part of the forum. So, you have some "family" tulips with "names" that you must care for and protect each year. Good for you! How is that project going? Is the Family growing every year?

Here I have another typical strange Dutch habit :

Today I ate carrots stew (in Dutch wortelstamp of hutspot),
most Dutch people make a hole in every stew, where the sauce (jus) goes in.

We call it: jus int kuultje

HUTSPOT (Hotchpotch with carrots and onions)

1000 gr. Potatoes
500 gr. large carrots (we call them Wintercarrots)
500 gr. onions

Boil the potatoes and when ready mash them. For extra taste you may add a cube of beef stock to the water before cooking the potatoes.
At the same time cook the sliced and/or cubed carrots and sliced onions; carrots at the bottom, onions on top.
When done (I like them to still have a little bite) mix the carrots and onions with the mashed potatoes.
Add some butter, pepper, salt, nutmeg. (I like to add a knife-tip of mayonnaise to the mashed potatoes)

Personally I like to stir-fry the vegetables first, using a little bit of sunflower oil.

With it I like to serve beef (rib piece), simmered. I season the meat with salt, pepper and ground cloves (not too much, just a pinch). This beef is best when prepared the day before.
Fry it in butter and when well browned add half a glass of rich red wine. Let it boil to get rid of the alcohol. Then add some sliced onions and a bay leave and let it simmer for a couple of hours. Next day you heat it up and all the flavours have penetrated the beef.

You can also serve the Hutspot with smoked saucage and/ or pork. (Spare ribs go well with it too)

Would you please let me/us know what the average or typical weather is like during winter in your area?

@ Matrix:
The winters in the Netherlands are usually mild, due to the fact that we have a long coastline, bordering the Northsea.
The coming two weeks some frost is expected. I think in general February is the coldest month, the seawater is cooled down much more by then.
Fall has been VERY wet this time, to say the least. Maybe the colder weather will also mean less precipitation.
I can hardly remember what a clear blue sky looks like or what it's like when the sun shines :thud

@ skygirlblue:
If you do try the recipe, let me know how it went and if you liked it. :girlyes:

Oh! Thank You DEF!!
It sounds like your area is much like the pacific coast of mid to upper regions of North America. That area is where many large wholesale plant nursery suppliers grow their plants for garden center sellers all over the continent, due to the excellant conditions for plant growing.
It seems like your mild, but lack of sun, will be good for your local plant life (flowers!!) when spring comes!
In eastern Ohio, where I reside, we have many stretch's of gray days too... and I very much understand the effect it has...the "smilie" u posted is perfect fit for it!

The carrot stew you posted would be something I'd like to try. Carrots are yummy! :eat
