Thanks for all the pics and coverage of the banding everyone. I actually have not had time to watch the vids yet but the pics are beautiful. :)
Technically, I don't consider this as a real banding - just a big circus show. I know they all say that there were lots of conflicts with dates, etc., etc. But when I first heard they were going to band at 20 days I was shocked. Every time I tried to make a comment about it on the chat I was shot down ... everyone said, 'oh, well, they're the biologists, etc. they wouldn't do anything to jeopardize the chicks.' My thought was that they were trying to please too many people - wanting to pick a date where everyone could be there. I was assured it was all in CCB's hands (mostly) and that Dr. Watts was sure it would be fine. My main concern was that they were not big enough yet for bands ... and I was right and now I see that Dr. Watts himself was surprised. (And yes, I'm gloating!)
What an unnecessary disturbance to this nest!! So now they'll have to go up again to band the other 2 - although a second climb was already planned to put the transmitter on. So my question would be - why not wait to band them and place the transmitter all in one trip? I don't understand their hurry in trying to band 20 days old chicks. I'm not a biologist or anything ... just someone who's been watching nests online for 4 years (and my own 'local' pair for 10 years!) ... but even I knew this was wrong. :(
This has always been one of my favorite nests - of course for the quality of the cam, but also for the knowledge and participation of NBG, CCB, WVEC ... everyone. But I'm losing my confidence in them with every new 'viewer/fan' they get. I think their fame is going to their heads.
Sorry, but I had to 'spout off'.
