BARTON COVE, MASSACHUSETTS UPDATE

March 16, 2010 - Update on the Eagle Cam for the 2010 Season

Efforts to restore the Barton Cove Eagle Cam for the 2010 season were unsuccessful. Although the camera transmitted pictures briefly during a test period with a portable power supply in mid-February, the camera was not transmitting images when connected to the main solar panel power supply a week later.

Since it is now nesting season, and local eagle viewers state that it appears that the eagles may be incubating an egg, no further work will be performed on the island until early fall.

Oh thats to bad I liked watching that one before the storm took it out,
watching that little one hopping all over and then I couldn't see it for a
few minutes and it scared me it fell in the water.
Then back in view staring at me as if to say ha!ha! on you

Looks like he is in jail.

I am dense when it comes to Hack Towers. How will he be fed and then how will he learn to fly and hunt?

I've learned some info. about Hacking Towers over the past couple years. 2 years ago Spirit and Skye from the PH nest had to be put in the tower after being rescued. And Pigeon Forge uses hack towers.

From what I remember - volunteers feed the eagles without being seen using puppets - at least until the eaglets can eat larger pieces, followed by whole fish, etc. No human contact (unless necessary for some reason) to keep them wild. When they are ready to fly they open the doors and out they go!

Thanks, Patti. Interesting about the puppet feeding. So the flying and hunting must just come naturally.

Wow, how sad for Noah. I thought a substitute female eagle that accepted young ones would be used to teach him to catch fish, and such. Dont have much confidence for Noah having to figure it all out by himself, as far as longevity? Would like to see a study on that - banding and also transmittering the hacked eaglets to see how their survival rate works out. Am sad to see this for Noah, I think maybe next time take the egg and put in another nest. Savannah was calling for Noah on the taped video, and thats sad too. In CA, those Harbor nests etc often put a new hatchling or month old eaglet in a nest, and the new parents are surprised, but happily go about raising it. That puppet thing has been around since the 70s, and I'm not sure how well it works. Sorry to sound down, Im just surprised and shocked he is alone there. :-(

I know how you feel LeeLee - but let me add a few positive points (I hope) - First, being that Derek and Savannah are in captivity there was/is no way for them to teach Noah anything. I don't agree with how young they take them from their nests, but ... I can't do anything about that.

Secondly - as far as finding food after being released from the Hack Tower - I do know on the Channel Islands they would continue to put food out for the eagles after they were released. Whether they do that here, I don't know but I hope they do.

Thirdly - you made a good point about banding them and putting transmitters on to find how well their survival rate is as opposed to naturally raised eaglets. That may be a good question for Dr. Sharpe in CA. :)

:clapegg: Thanks for the comments PattiO. :bonnet: I think I will surf Dr. Sharpe because I actually have a video of him releasing an eaglet into a nest that had no eaglet. It was the west end nest I believe, 2005 maybe? He put a broken goose shell (?) beside the eaglet, and it fooled the mom into thinking that she had an egg and it had hatched! :egghatch: They raised the eaglet. I would have liked to have seen that done with Noah, or if he is too big, I would have liked them to have just taken the egg and placed it with a foster nesting pair in the beginning. I do understand Savannah & Derek cannot properly instruct Noah because they are captive, hence the plight. Will surf Dr. Sharpe and his info on hacking. Thanks again :D

Noah, a six-week-old eaglet, is now in a hack tower at an undisclosed location, learning how to survive on its own.

for the first time in 100 years there are now two eaglets which have hatched at the nest on an island at the John Heinz NWR in the Tinicum marshes in philadelphia by the international airport and I95. This is an image from a USFWS staffer harvest off flicker shot this week of one proud parent and thier new twins
