In about a week, we'll have pics with a new baby eaglet!

One thing I often wonder about: why do the eagles put their beaks into the nesting material and chew on it? To remove insects? To make it softer?

I always assumed they were fluffing it up to make it softer. I also think some of it is boredom.

I've always heard it called 'aerating' the nest. When they sit on the eggs it pushes the nesting material down and flattens it out. So, they pick at it and fluff it up to keep the eggs cushioned and keep air flow. When they do a 'face plant' like in my picture above - that's when they are just settling down on the eggs and plant their beak in the nest to anchor themselves while they wiggle down onto the eggs. The famous "Hornby Wiggle"!

Video: Hatch Watch

Today, the tiny eaglet may break through the membrane to the air sac. The air sac is located at the blunt end of the egg. It is formed when the inner and outer membranes separate shortly after the egg is laid. The air sac helps the egg save water so that the egg will not dry out. The air inside the air sac is the first breath the chick will take before hatching out of the shell.
