The cam's back up now! Gosh those eaglets are getting HUGE!!! (I'd take a picture to post, but it's really windy there with the nest moving from side to side and I'm getting dizzy watching.)

Eaglets are scheduled to be banded Wednesday, March 31 at 9:00 a.m. EDT.
Follow the events in person at Norfolk Botanical Garden, or online on Eagle Cam.

I'm sorry I won't be there. Judging by the chat rooms, its going to be a big crowd. Folks are actually flying in for it. Glad to be able to see it on the cam.

Actually I think a lot of the folks in the chat made plans to go in April - because that's when they thought the banding would be. Alas, CCB had to schedule it for this week, which I'm not happy about - but I won't get into that. But I know all the natives will probably attend.

Being that it's 5 days till Easter and I work at a church, I probably won't have time to watch tomorrow. :(

Banding about to take place . . . according to NBG "Right now there are about 3500 people watching. This number is constantly going up."

Thanks for the great recap from today. It was hard to take pics with all the shade, and Susan definitely got the best of the bunch! Hopefully the parents will be in the nest soon. Usually the eaglets are pretty tired after a banding event, but not these. They have been screaming for mom and dad ever since they got back!

Wow, Dorien, your video will be excellent for those who could not watch it live. So much better than a slideshow! :spingirl:

Here's a few more from post-banding. Unfortunately the eaglets were smaller than normal for their age, and they had to schedule this banding early, so the little one got no bands and #2 took his off quickly. They went back up and retrieved the newly found play toy before it caused harm.

It took the parents several hours to come back to the nest, which is unusual. I think last year when I was there mom was back in the nest in 10 minutes. Of course, #1 the bully was ensuring her share. Dad came in to feed #3 with a new fish. Mom was very aggressive with him to get at the new fish even though she had one, and took everything but the head from him. It was interesting watching all the post banding interaction with the parents. They actually seemed a little cranky with each other. Of course, they displayed their typical patience and way overfed the chicks, who could not keep their eyes open with their overflowing crops. So cute to watch!

So here's the pics from all that:

Thanks for those pics and info, Barb...any idea why they were smaller than normal? That's interesting...soooooooooooo...I guess, only one of these eaglets will have bands? I can't imagine them going back up to reband...

Its very strange sgb, especially considering how much food they eat here. Bryan Watts wrote a note on the CCB blog, and the weights are substantially below average. He was equally perplexed.

They are planning on banding the smallest two when they put a satellite on one of them, which will probably be the first week in May. I think that's about 3 weeks before fledging.
