With great imagination, I think maybe there might be a small crack in the white egg.

...or not.

I have just come to the conclusion that these eggs are not going to hatch. 1st egg was laid on 4/27. It's been 6 weeks. I've been watching for 15-20 minutes now and there's been no adult on the nest. :( Perhaps this was their first year.

Edit ... well, she cam back at 1:17 A.M. our time (EST). Then the male cam in with food and she took it and flew off. Romeo is currently incubating.

I just did some research ..... Lesser Spotted Eagles incubate for 6 weeks!! And the odds on the younger chick surviving is rare.

Quote:
Probably does not breed before 4 or 5 years old.
The nest is usually built in a tree not to far away from the forest edge. Both deciduous and coniferous trees are used.
The female lays 1 - 3 eggs, normally 2. The eggs are incubated for about 6 weeks.
Cainism, that is, the killing of the 2nd born eagle by it's older sibling is very common in the Lesser Spotted Eagle (more common than in larger eagles like the Eastern Imperial Eagle or even the Golden Eagle). Only rarely do 2 eagles fledge. [Mebs and Schmidt 2006] write, that in Poland, from almost 300 nests, only in 9 did 2 eagles fledge. In Hungary, 2 eagles left the nest in 2 out of 52 nests. In Belarus one pair out of 48 raised two chicks.
The fledged eagle is dependent on it's parents for another 3-4 weeks and is provided with food until it leaves for migration. Normally, the young eagle leaves the breeding area before it's parents and on it's own [Mebs & Schmidt 2006].

Video: First Baby Eaglet Hatches in Estonia

The Lesser Spotted Eagles have a new baby eaglet! Hours before, Tuuli and Remo stocked up on small mammals, which are now scattered around the nest. Perhaps Tuuli alerted Remo that hatching was imminent?

That may be a Cuckoo we hear in the background.

Recorded at 9:32 PM local time

1st egg: 4/27
2nd egg: 5/1
1st hatch: 6/10

I did a 2 hour time lapse of the hatch. Chick peeping at 2:20.

Thank you for the video beans. Your video picks up where my left off. We got it covered :sunno:

Mick, did you get any sleep? The time difference between the West Coast and Estonia means we either stay up very late or get up very early (or both!) to see the action at this nest! :suncrazy:

I do hope that if the other egg hatches, that there is plenty of food and these chicks get along.....nail biting time for a few days...

If the second egg hatches, we must be prepared for the siblicide that will follow. The stronger chick will kill the weaker one. It's survival... perhaps there is not enough food if all of the chicks survived in these nests.

Video: Still Only One Chick in the Nest

The camera is working again! We can see the second egg has not yet hatched. As the days go by, there is less chance that the egg will hatch. These eagles practice siblicide, with the stronger eaglet killing the weaker. I'm very happy with just one egg hatching!

Recorded at 9:48 PM local time

1st egg: 4/27
2nd egg: 5/1
1st hatch: 6/10

Hi beans. I left immediately after posting for a camping trip (Mt St Helens), so I just read your post. It was in the morning when I saw the first signs of a hatch. I keep doing small recordings for two hours but it took forever to link them together (what was I thinking!?) and so I left late for camping.

I appreciate your recordings while I was gone. I sure hope the second egg fails to hatch.

Thanks for the videos beans.

Video: Tuuli & Remo’s Baby Eaglet Alone

Tuuli leaves for about five minutes. While she's gone, her tiny eaglet looks around. Mom returns and snuggles him into her soft, warm feathers.

The second egg is still there.

2nd egg: 5/1
1st hatch: 6/10
