The circumstances here are so unfortunate. We do seem to be seeing these kinds of disruptions more and more every year, but I wish they would occur before chicks rather than after. Anyway, I admire Lisa for making the call so quickly to turn off the cam.

Beautiful tribute, gigi.

Oh my gosh...I just got home and read this sad-sad news.

When I looked in (Friday and Sat.) on Blackwater I had the same
feeling that something was not quite right...really since early in the week.
Last year we had fish after fish on the nest AND Mom was
on the nest. Not this year. I would bring up the cam and see the
eaglets alone and was so scared for them...

Bye :cryinggirl: little ones-you were loved.

I thought the camera was going to be off for awhile
gigi that is beautiful

OK I just read this:
Craig Koppie of the US Fish & Wildlife Service has removed the eaglets for examination. We'll report more on that soon.

Thank you all for your words and observations.

Gigi your tribute image is beautiful. May I add it to Blackwater's first page - the info and link page?

I was just wondering what this bird is. Hopefully someone on the Blackwater blog will ID it.

It's a juvie Eagle ... and that's the second time it's been seen there. There was also a sub-adult there the other day.

The head looked so small to be a juvenile. I saw the sub adult there yesterday and the 2 adults. Forgot to post that.

osprey cam is on and that is why I thought that that was an osprey.

Sounds like intrusions will be more common in the years to come. :valmad:

I think you are right. Just the fact that the skies are becoming more populated with all the success of the eagle restoration. This is part of all of it - just don't like seeing it...

This was Dr. Watts' response to a question about Blackwater on the Richmond chat....consistent with all of your comments.

DrWatts-CCB-1: As the bald eagle population within the Chesapeake Bay runs out of breeding space it is undergoing a dramatic transition. Once a peaceful neighborhood, the Bay is now overrun with birds that are of breeding age with no territory of their own. With few other options, these birds are now vying for territories that are occupied. The turmoil has two outcomes including increased adult mortality as floaters fight territory holders for space and reduced nesting success as territory holders are forced to spend more time defending eggs and young. Floaters kill young chicks for two reasons. The first is that causing a nest failure creates a better opportunity for them to take over a territory. The second is that if they are successful at replacing an adult, they have no incentive to raise unrelated chicks. The latter case is similar to what we see when a male lion or baboon takes over a group and kills all dependent young. The killings eliminate unrelated young but also serves to bring the female back into breeding condition. There is some evidence that eagles may benefit from this tactic as well.
