On CCB FB at 10:30am EDT
"Here is the latest status on the eagle nest. CCB has been at the site since Friday morning and the adults are not coming into the nest. They are around, but not landing. Dr. Watts is not sure why, he has not seen this behavior with adults before. The activity on Thursday to get the cam operational may have spooked them. They have continued to get closer to the nest today, so we hope they will bring food in the nest today. The female brought a fish close, but did not bring it in this morning. Biologists can hide on the site so they do not see them. We are monitoring the chicks from the cam and they are ok. There are several options being considered, including climbing up to the nest to feed the chicks today and giving the adults more time or taking them out and fostering them in other nests with similar age chicks (they would be fed first).

These eagles have been assumed to be acclimated to activity since they are located in a neighborhood, but researchers have known some eagles do not do well around human activity. Although this is a quiet neighborhood, there is always some activity close to the nest. We do not know why they are hesitant to come back, but hope they will by the end of the day. We will provide updates as things progress.

On CCB FB at 1213 EDT
CCB Richmond Eagle Nest Camera Thank you for all the support here today. For those who don't know, CCB has been working with eagles for 50 years and was one of the leaders in bringing them back from extinction. They understand bald eagle behavior better than anyone else in the world. They have gone into nests and banded thousands of eagles and always use great caution. The behavior of this pair is not typical, and they are used to people being around. Dr. Watts and all the biologists he has consulted with in the last day agree that the actions taken by CCB should not have disrupted this nest. While we do not understand why these adults are behaving the way they are, CCB's only priority is the safety of the chicks. We will continue monitoring the situation and act accordingly as time goes on today.

The eaglets were observed self-feeding,

2:06pm EDT
"Update from Dr. Watts
obxbarb on chat: The adult eagles are still perched in the trees nearby the nest. They have defended the nest against any intruders and obviously their instincts are still intact. Last night, a CCB biologist and a wildlife vet went to the nest. The biologist climbed the tree, removed the eagles for hydration and feeding. This was all done with discussion of federal experts and state experts and regulatory authorities. They left food for the chicks in the nest as well, which they have eaten today. They were assessed by the vet and are totally healthy. Dr. Watts has decided to eliminate any distractions from the adults, so he is going back up tonight to take down the camera and the chicks will be fed again. He wants to give these chicks every opportunity to be raised by their parents. Again, all of this has been discussed with state and federal authorities."

:egg14: Oh my goodness, I'm just getting caught up on this nest and was so surprised at the turn of events. Haven't read what the chatters are saying, but I hope it is not too bad. Hope all works out well here.

Yes, you moderators did a fantastic job with the chat room as well as operating the camera and documenting events with video. Can't even imagine the hours. You should all be very proud. :toast

I think going up there just take the camera down is stupid ... sorry ... but it seems at this point they need to be left totally alone!!! If they were disturbed by them just being on site ... then stop climbing up the tree!!

Thanks for all the support here, and the mods on the cam site have been simply remarkable. Its been a very tough day. Dr. Watts has been talking with other experts, and nobody knows why these eagles have been spooked. He has been up in nests as many as 4 times in a season and they aren't bothered. Between he and Dr. Byrd, they have been working with eagles for 50 years, so nobody in the world has more experience. I went over to the site yesterday and watched from a concealed location as the eagles circled around, scared away hawks, but never landed in the nest. I just couldn't believe it, although this pair has had a tough time finding food and have been hunting for hours at a time. They had not fed the chicks since 2:00 the prior day. I was texting my reports to CCB, and they were developing back up plans with the state and federal agencies. The chicks were fed and given fluids last night by a wildlife vet, and were very healthy. The eagles stayed perched close to the nest today but still never came in. Yesterday Dr. Watts flew looking for the right nests to foster them to, but strongly prefers to give the parents as much of a shot as possible. The biologists discussed the cam as a possible distraction, so they are taking it down now and feeding the chicks. If the adults don't start to feed soon, then the only option will be to foster them.

What a weird situation. :egg16:
Can't it have been some animal or snake or bird that invaded the nest or tried to???
Could it have been an ant army trekking through? I saw that at the webcam where the goose had laid her eggs, in the abandoned RTH nest. (Forgot the name right now).

2:58pm EDT update from obxbarb after speaking with Dr Watts. Posted on chat,

"The eagles have been around the nest tree area most of the day and doing inspection flights over the nest
The eaglets are moving around, so it is obviously attracting their attention. No plans are certain at this point, but it appears Dr. Watts is willing to wait this out for several days, maybe until Thursday. He is optimistic that the strategy is working, so we all just need to be patient. The eaglets will need to be fed again mid week if the parents don't come in, which he expects they will at this point."

OK I admit that the experts are experts but I just don't understand why the camera has to be taken down just leave it off til they fledge but it just seems that it will only bother the parents if they keep seeing humans going up and sown feeding yes but the camera doesn't seem all that important right now or do they need it for something else? I'm just wondering please don't take it the qrong way just alot of wondering here. Thanks

PS I'm so glad that they are feeding the chicks, thanks for the hook up to the video :egg7:

KF, Dr. Watts wanted to get rid of anything that even had the remote chance of causing a disruption. Yes, the cam didn't bother them in the past, but who knows what has created this behavior. It could be one thing, could be combination of things. No clue. .could be the color of the wires. . who knows at this point. . but since they had to climb the tree to get the chicks to feed, then they took the cam as well ..

Everything is speculation right now!!

:grwelcom hat!!! Its great to have you here. . be sure to ask questions if you get confused or get lost. . this is a lot different than the Richmond Chat that you are used to, so just look around at all the different nests and pictures that we have here. . Also, under each major forum, you will see cam links to all the falcon/eagle/osprey/kestrel/owl, etc. nest. Feel free to click on any of those links and it will take you to the cams. .

Enjoy. .

SGB

From Richmond FB,

The eagle parents returned to the nest at 7:30 this morning. Mom has been there almost all morning, and dad brought in 2 fish. Dr. Watts believes things will go back to normal here. Biologists will leave the site and Dr. Watts will be back mid-week to check on them. He will take photos when he feels it is safe to do so. In the meantime, he has written a letter to all of our devoted eagle fans:

Read the letter from Dr. Watts here,
