WOW. . something definitely looks wrong. . at first I thought she wasn't gonna put any weight on it, but then later, it appeared she did. .

(Taken from the video~not terribly clear)

Appears either something is either caked on the top of the foot and that middle toe or some kind of injury to that area of the foot.

I was reading at RRP from schneid this is from yesterday
My trip to the nest was concerning. I went over there about 3:15 this afternoon. There was a dead deer on the side of the road by the bridge, which is about 200 yards from the nest. Seeing the deer was upsetting enough, but I went from house to house looking for someone to move the deer away from the highway and I couldn't find anyone to help. I finally found someone home, but nobody to help move the deer.
Lucy was perched in her second favorite tree in the pasture when I got there. While I was watching, Lucy flew into her favorite tree. I got a couple pictures of her perched, but I'm sure they don't show her foot. She then flew across the road and was perched in a tree near the deer. I watched her for about 1/2 hour and she remained perched. It was growing dark so I had to leave.
On the way home I stopped in Ettrick and asked three hunters what I should do about a dead deer along the roadside. They said there are about six dead deer along the roadside between Ettrick and the next town. They said I should just leave them. I don't know if they thought I was going to load them into my car or what! Confused, I just headed home.
I told the land owners about Lucy being hurt. The woman said her husband had seen Lucy lying in the field a couple days ago and thought it was unusual. While we were talking Lucy flew across the road and perched on a nearby tree closer to the deer. I think it is great that she has something to eat that isn't contaminated by lead, but I worry about her hitting a car. They haven't seen Larry for a couple weeks and I didn't see any sign of him either.
I wish I had something better to report.

Good news! Talon got my message and removed the deer from the side of the road!

It seems there is at least more than talon on the ground (schneid) watching which is great

Thanks for posting that info, KF. . I am so glad that there are others, near the nest, that can help keep watch. I did go and read all the posts. I am not a member of RRP, but maybe you could pm Krooney and let him/her know that it was NOT a fishing line around Violet's leg, but the federal bands that caused the damage that led to her demise.

Talon, so glad you were able to move the deer carcass!!!

SGB got it corrected I just hope that they don't think I'm being snotty :teehee:
I don't know how far you got on reading but I see that MpMom has posted this

FYI:
I have contacted Marge with Regi in Wisconsin. She is an expert. She has already made contact with me and will be in contact with Talon.
Lucy needs to be looked at
Regi is as far as I'm concern one of the best places I love to read their blog, and Marge is just awesome if something can be done she'll figure it out.

Thanks KF. . nope, I totally missed that post. Trapping is going to be a huge challenge. I remember they tried to trap one of the NBG adults several years ago (gosh, now I can't remember why..Dad was injured? sick? was it even NBG? gosh, my memory is shot)..they were not successful. Obviously, it all worked out ok as he healed on his own.

they staked out favorite haunts and set up a bait trap with no luck. I can't remember how many tries they made, though. .

I'm sure everybody is trying to get some decent pictures in order to have a better understanding as to what could be going on. To me, it either looks like caked and dried on mud OR the top of her foot has been split open. I would hate to think that somehow she got caught in a trap (or wedged in between something) and in her attempt to free herself, she ripped open her foot, or worse case, ripped off that middle toe/talon.

I'm just praying its nothing too serious!!!

Update on Lucy

From The National Eagle Center posted on the Eagles 4 kids site

Today, Scott Mehus, our Education Director went to check on Lucy. Based on the videos taken in the last few days, it seemed like something might be wrong with her foot. So, Scott wanted to check out the situation a little more closely. He observed Lucy through a spotting scope and had good views of her feet. He said they look better to him than they did in the video - whether the video wasn't clear, or whether her foot has gotten better, we don't know.
Scott and Darrin also observed Lucy taking off and landing several times, all normally. Landing with both feet, not indicating anything wrong with one of them.
Scott also reports that he observed Lucy after she had just eaten. He saw her 'feking' which is a normal behavior for eagles to clean their beaks after a meal. He also observed her lower mandible with fresh blood, so her meal was something nice and fresh, which she likely had killed. All good signs that this eagle has healthy feet!
We will continue to watch this situation closely. If it becomes clear that Lucy needs help, we are fully prepared to get her what she needs. For now, we watch and wait.
Thanks to everyone for their care and concern for these wild creatures!

November 28, 2012 - Update

Many have asked some good questions. What happened with Lucy's talon? We do not really know what happened with Lucy's talon. We do think she is doing better than just a few days ago based on our own observations and that of Scott Mehus at the National Eagle center on his visit yesterday.

Why are they not busy in the nest? Lucy's injury surely has something to do with it but keep in mind we did not have many visits at this point last season either. Our first season we did not see them on the nest until January!

Third, where's Larry? My best guess is Larry is around and out and about. Even though this is a pair that has a special bond, doesn't mean that they will hang side by side all the time. We would expect to see him more and it can be of concern especially with hunting season. There are deer around that have been shot and not found. There is always concern of lead poisoning especially at this time of year. I hope that helps answer some questions.

Finally, I have had very good conversations with locals. I would like to ask a favor all local people concerned. I would like to know when you see an eagle, the approximate location, and if you see two. If you see one land, how did it do on landing? Yesterday Lucy did a wonderful job on landing but we want to know if she startes to struggle with that. If she appears to loose balance or stumbles we want to know. Emails can be sent to [email protected] if you have important info on our eagles!

We thank everyone for their support. We are doing everything that we possibly can in this situation. The kids are handling this very well, and fully understand that nature can be tough at times.
Sincerely,
Mr. Briggs

Not good now ....

Quote:
We have been waiting patiently for a better look than what we have had. Today Lucy was on the nest for close to 4 hours. She did not give us many good looks, but we got enough to know that her right foot does appear compromised. The left is better but in my opinion not 100%. We have never seen her or Larry at this time of year on the nest for the duration we saw today. She was alert when she need to be, but wanted to doze off too. There were more than 5 crop drops which means she has fed recently and 2 poop shoots as well.

Video from today ... Poor Lucy :(

Yea. . I just read about her situation on their FB page. . and came here to see if Talon had posted anything. . her feet DO NOT look good!! I watched parts of the video .. .its hard to tell, but either something has penetrated that foot or she has already lost blood flow in one or more of her toes. . the other foot is also not looking that great. . and to be honest, I didn't think her feathers looked in top condition either. . could have just been the lighting or the video. . Boy, I sure wish I lived close enough to help. . I just pray they can trap her. .

I am so sorry to hear about this situation. :nailbite: I wonder what kind of trap they are using. Hope it works.

Got this from FB at Eagles4kids so now I'm comfused some ask for people to go monitor & this is saying don't
about an hour ago
The National Eagle Center

The National Eagle Center continues to be in touch with Eagles4Kids in regards to Lucy’s condition. After reviewing the most recent photos and video of Lucy, a plan is underway to capture Lucy in order assess the apparent injury to her foot. While we have had views of Lucy via video, we really won’t know what is going on with her until we can examine her physically.

We are asking that people please give space for this plan to work. In order to be successful, the area around the nest must remain undisturbed, with no increase in human activity in Lucy’s territory. Our goal is for Lucy to be as comfortable and relaxed as possible throughout the process. We know that many want to check on these Lucy and Larry in person, but ask that you please avoid the nest area until we have completed our work. The streaming video from the nest continues, and if Lucy or Larry returns to the nest, viewers will be the first to know.

We have experience with the sa
fe and efficient capture and release of eagles in our work on the Golden Eagle Project. We are working with a raptor trapping specialist and wildlife rehabilitator to ensure the health and safety of Lucy throughout the process. If upon closer examination, it is determined that Lucy requires medical attention, she will be immediately transported to Raptor Education Group, Inc. (REGI). Marge Gibson and REGI have more than 40 years experience with bald eagle rehabilitation.

While we cannot know the outcome of this process now, it seems clear that we must intervene on Lucy’s behalf, if only to determine what may have happened to her. An eagle’s healthy feet and talons are critical to their ability to survive. We will do our best to keep people informed about the project as it continues. All of the partners involved in this project share the goal of a safe and efficient rehabilitation and release back to the wild for Lucy and all injured wildlife.

Thanks to everyone for your care and concern for Lucy and all wild eagles.

I saw that on E4kids FB page. . so, who knows...I'm not an expert, but it makes sense for people to stay away so as not to scare her from entering the trap area. .

Maybe part of what needs to happen is a more heightened community awareness...everybody keeping watch for a downed eagle, etc....not groups of people sitting near the tree/trap to watch for her. . .I know that eagles can be very sensitive to changes in their environment. . Lucy may be used to moving cars and 1 human being in her area, but you introduce more than what she considers normal for her environment, and she could spook. . just thinking out loud here. .

I remember while watching the Richmond pair, it was comical what they were used too. . residents walking around their houses, chain saws, leaf blowers, etc. . but, let Barb show up at one of the houses, and one of the adults would notice right away and go all defensive!!! Barb was not supposed to be there and they let it be known!!!!
