The saga continues...WVEC report from 1/11..with video

I personally think the female that is currently being seen is the resident female...and I'm sticking with that!!!! such tragic news of the lost female. I keep wondering if she had a mate somewhere...

Thank you skygirlblue.

I was happy to read this statement because it's a step towards an opinion from DGIF.
"DGIF officials do not believe this is the female eagle that's been building a new nest with the resident male since the fall."

and I thought that Mr Buma's statement was direct; sometimes direct is good.
"The long-time resident female at the Garden was killed in a collision with an airplane last April.
This is life as it really is. It's not cleaned up. It's not sanitized in any way. Birds live in nature. Birds die just like animals die," said Norfolk Botanical Garden executive director Don Buma."

Big excitement at the Garden yesterday. Thankfully, the resident pair were not the two eagles involved.

See pics here:

This afternoon the male and this barely 5 year old female were at the nest
joined by a juvie who came close to the nest until the female got
him out of there. They were also at the nest this morning. Female on the
left, male on the right.

Would have loved to have seen the almost five year old female chasing the juvie away. Thanks for the great shot Jim!

A lil bit off topic,

NX is in the flight cage.
The RT hawk had to be euthanized.
After several months of rehabilitation, the condition of the left wing of Red-tailed Hawk #11-2361 was quickly deteriorating. After repeated radiographs, physical examinations, and additional testing, it became clear that the hawk’s elbow joint was greatly compromised. No treatment options were available for this type of painful injury, and on January 17, the hawk was humanely euthanized.
You are currently watching Bald Eagle #11-0475 — NX! This eagle was admitted to the Wildlife Center in early December after she was hit by a car. NX suffered a fractured shoulder, and spent several weeks in bandages to help stabilize her injury. On January 17, she was moved into A2 — one of the Center’s largest flight pens.

Look at this little face looking up at the cam!

Unbanded juvenile on the NBG nest 1-20-12 and chased off by the adults. The visitor had moved a stick on the nest and the pair rearranged the stick, putting it back in it's place.

Update from Reese's blog,
"We do not yet have all our questions answered about the death of the adult female bald eagle at Norfolk Botanical Garden on Jan 6, 2012. However, as of yesterday Jan 20, 2012, we do have the answer to one question. Is the current female that the male is with the same female that he had been with since Sept 2011? The answer – NO! The current female is yet another fifth year bald eagle in her first breeding season. Look at her tail feathers that have brown/black in them unlike the prior female. She is also molting head feathers with a distinct bare spot in the top of her head, and her bill is still turning yellow with grey. She also has many more older, more worn, lighter brown body contour feathers. Eagle cam photos Jan 21, 2012."

thanks for the report and the link to the pictures. I loved that after the kiddo was chased away, they adults put the sticks back to the way they had them. Just like my house when my kids start rearranging!

 I'm so surprised to hear that the female is ANOTHER new one. Maybe Dad is finding that replacing Mom is harder than he thought. (I know, I know, human emotions.)

Funny about the rearranging of the stick.
