Apparently an intruder kept mom off the nest all night, leaving dad with incubation duties throughout the night. . .at least, that was what some of the Richmond Eagle cam chatters were saying this morning...

I just looked in on the nest. .. all looks peaceful, with mom on eggs. .

Me 2 Barb. Shep seems to be doing really well. We were worried about whether he'd know what to do. Belle leaves him there all afternoon sometimes. Now we just have to hope they both hatch and he knows what to do then!!! :nailbite: Saying my prayers!! :thumbup

I should learn to make comments like that ^.

An intruder landed on the nest around 4ish ... if anyone was watching or recording please let me know. Belle took off after it and hasn't been back to the nest yet. Shep did an egg roll and the eggs look OK... hopefully!

Holy cow! I just read the details of the intrusion on the Hancock forum. It was brutal...just like last year! Wow, who would have thought the biggest territorial battles would be in West Virginia? Seems like the new male did a great job of defending the nest.

Here's a link to the Hancock page, description & screencaps,

Also the members call Shep by a nickname, Smitty. PattiO can you tell me anything about that? I'll add the nickname to our info page.

Mick ... I think that's just what they started calling him last year ... while everyone else was calling him Truder.

Ah .. wait ... Hoda posted the they call him Smitty because he was 'smitten' by Belle. :)

OH my.. .I just finished reading the Hancock account of the attack!!! :nervous: I had heard about it, but didn't know it was that bad. . this poor nest!!

I do hope the eggs are ok. I hope since they have resumed their routine, that means the eggs are fine!!

I'm not sure I can start calling Shep, Smitty!!!

I do like she better. I think Hancock forum started calling him Smitty.
I think he will be Shep to me.
All seems to be going well there now.

He is Shep to me. :) And he's doing a terrific job! Belle sometimes leaves him there allllll day! And he stays and does his duty! Now we just have to wait and make sure he goes out and gets the fish!!

I think Belle is breaking him in. Teaching him how to incubate and then hopefully his hunting will kick in.
