Eagles named: Hello, Virginia and James!
RICHMOND, Va. --

Image
Here's the moment you've been waiting for. The names of the nesting pair on the Richmond Eagle Cam are ... Virginia and James.

Those names topped The Times-Dispatch's online poll, taking 38 percent of the 11,202 votes cast.

The names "celebrate both Virginia and the James River," said Maria Claiborne, 9, of Richmond, one of about eight people who nominated those winning names. "I think the the eagles are so cool. Thanks so much for giving me the chance to name them."

"Bald Eagles should have names with a good pedigree," said Paul Bedell of Chesterfield County, who also suggested the winning names.

The eagles are nesting along the James in the city.

The names were listed in the poll as James and Virginia, but we think Virginia should get first billing. She is bigger and bosses James around.

Here is how the vote split among the other finalists:

Ralph and Cricket, for longtime James River Park manager Ralph White and his wife: 27 percent.

Liberty and Justice: 23 percent.

Edgar and Annabel, for former Richmonder Edgar Allan Poe and his love poem "Annabel Lee": 11 percent.

Edith and Eggbert. We thought they just sounded right, but voters disagreed: 1 percent.

Voting began Feb. 3 and ended Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Times-Dispatch chose the five finalists from names that viewers suggested in more than 560 emails.

Not only did the eagles get names this week, they got an egg. Virginia laid her first on Wednesday evening. One or two more could be on the way.

The Richmond Eagle Cam is a project of the Times-Dispatch and the Center for Conservation Biology, a research group.

Thanks Kitten. Originally we were talking about putting the cam on this nest, but they haven't had very good luck. Yet again this year.

We had a nice chat on ustream with Dr. Watts today. Here is the transcript for those who are interested:

:teehee: Susan. . .I know. . .

OK. .. a few pics from yesterday:

There was a brief period of heavy snow, with thunder. . heavy wind throughout the day. Dad brought mom a huge fish and proceeded to perch on ? IR Cam? I'm not sure.

Image

The sun finally came out, dad left his perch, and finished off the fish. .I'm sure mom would have liked the leftovers for her midnight snack. .. but no. .

Image

Also, from yesterday. .. a must see video by Mick. . scared us all to death!!!

. . . and finally, during wind and cold and darkness of night (6:17 pm) Mom laid her second egg. . .also by Mick. The second egg was not actually seen until 10 pm. .

From this morning:

changing of the egg guard
