JudyB checked in with Lisa ... she posted this on the webpage ...

Quote:
Cam watchers noticed that the parents spent a good bit of time off the eggs on Friday. We saw them calling out a lot, so we're not sure if there was an intruder nearby (like another eagle). We'll keep an eye on the nest over the weekend to see if the behavior continues.

It looks like Mom on the nest now so I hope they're both OK.

I did see the parents early this morning.
So luckily both are still there.

This early in incubation, if they are off for awhile it is not harmful. We have seen many things over the last few years.

Thank you Arles!! Glad you caught both this morning! I'm still a little concerned. There must be another eagle or something bothering them.

This is a report from Lisa at Blackwater

As we mentioned on the Eagle Cam page, over the last two days we’ve seen the parents off the eggs more than we would expect. We also saw photos of them calling out to something near the nest. We can’t be sure, but from our point of view, it appeared that there might have been another bird (likely an eagle) bothering them by flying too close to the nest.

Today we got news from another volunteer that a bird group saw two golden eagles flying in the general area of the Eagle Cam nest, and it’s possible this is what was bothering our parents.

Lucy, one of our cam watchers, made a YouTube video from a long set of photos from Saturday morning showing the parents on and off the eggs rather frequently. We also captured a series of photos from Friday where we could see the eagle parents calling out a good deal.

On Friday afternoon, there was a long stretch when the eggs were uncovered, but the sun was out and the temperatures were mild, so we’re hoping the parents were able to judge how long the eggs could be left alone before they were damaged. We have very experienced parents, so if they can prevent the eggs from being lost, we know they’ll do the best they can.

Those of us who have witnessed intruder eagles at other nests — such as last year’s NCTC Eagle Cam nest in West Virginia — know how disruptive an intruding eagle can be.

Just recently the Norfolk Eagle Cam had an immature bald eagle hanging around the nest (they don’t believe it was a former chick), which the parents chased away. The Norfolk Eagle Cam gallery has some interesting photos of the altercation, including these two shots: Photo 1 and Photo 2. Even if an immature is a young bird that was raised at the nest, the parents will not normally tolerate any eagle visitors when they’re about to start nesting or when there are eggs/chicks at the nest, so even a former chick will be chased away.

Just a reminder that we hope to see hatching start around February 15 at our nest. Our next web log post will look at what’s happening inside the eggs as the chicks develop.

Until next time,
Lisa – webmaster

Web update:

02/01/12:
Our parents have been less agitated lately, but we did see something a bit odd recently. The male brought in a meal, and then mantled it (hid it) from the female before he let her share. Normally you see this in a new mate -- not a mate that's fathered two eggs.
