Here are three post-egg videos. The first begins just a few minutes after the egg-laying yesterday afternoon with Mom incubating and giving the egg its first roll. Dad makes a couple of visits but Mom stays put and he leaves:

The second is early this morning, Mom takes a break and returns:

The 14 minutes that she was off the egg seems alarming, but I have read that this behavior might be an attempt on the part of eagles to reduce the asynchronous hatching span of the eggs in the clutch -- the eggs are laid several days apart and hatch several days apart; but if the eagles can slow down the incubation time of the first egg, the eggs will hatch closer together, the hatchlings will be closer in size, and the youngest hatchling might not have as hard a time competing for food.

The third video shows Dad getting his first look at the egg and taking his turn incubating:

Thanks Elf for the great videos! Sure was windy there! In Richmond there was a lot of time off egg one, and Dr. Watts said not to worry. It happens sometimes.

Early morning switch:

I'm watching carefully today to see if she lays a third egg. Last year and the year before there were only 2 (well, that we know of for 2010, there was no cam then, ground observers saw 2 fledge).
