the cam is offline now. either they don't want us to know what happened to Violet or they are doing some rescue right now. I hate the "wait and see" attitude!

:suntalk: News is not good. They will try to capture Violet tomorrow. If they cannot treat her on site, she will go to the Bronx Zoo, and they will also capture "tweety" the eyas to take to the zoo. However, the one expert says that if Violet has to be removed, there is no point in trying to save the eyas. (she cannot survive in the wild without imprinting with parents) So the viewers are saying they may euthanize tweety at the zoo because she cannot be rehabbed? Here is link to news story:

today is tweety's last day of freedom...tomorrow, what?

I've helped to rehab many baby birds, but never a Redtail, so I can't comment. For some of the birds (like Cormorants), we used puppets and covered our faces so that they wouldn't connect feeding with humans.

Bev, do you have information about rehabbed baby Redtails? Or can point me to a book or article? I'm at a loss here, and very sad and frustrated.

--edited-- just heard from a rehabilitator that baby hawks CAN be successfully raised in good wildlife centers. And released.

:tearhair Could someone who rehabs please contact the Bronx Zoo! Im not kidding! Here is a link to their contacts page:

http://www.bronxzoo.com/contact-us.aspx

Someone who rehabs should email and explain now, so before they do anything permanent they can consider another opinion. I cant hurt. Let them know thousands are watching and waiting. I would try the public relations contact person and have them forward it to the director of raptors at the zoo. They could also mention Bob Sallinger at the Audubon (Raptor Cam) in portland who deals with the redtails in specifics. His advice should be worth something! He's been with Audubon dealing w red tails for years and years.

OK now this is what me myself is getting out of reading everything a couple time now

I just read the comments on this and they have removed any of the comments about the baby being put down that was just people talking to fast before they think and not reading the whole thing they are not going to put it down they are saying that it can't be set free but I would say to that if it means it will live then so be it, it is a sad thing but it will be alive and who know after all this comotion about this they may just let a rehab take it and teach it to be a Hawk and go free. We'll have to wait and see and they sure aren't going to do something that stupid anyway not with SOOO many people watching they would have half of New York and the rest of us after their butts.

The IWS and other groups have fostered eaglets into other nests with "chicks" the same age after they started thier reintroduction program of the BAEA to santa catalina and santa cruz. They too used eagle puppets so as not to imprint humans to the eaglets. IMHO. if this can be done with raptors such as eagles and even falcons into other nests it can be done with Red Tails

The City Room link update has changed the wording in the update. The expert now says (probably after complaints) that they will not net Violet as it is too dangerous, but will set a baited trap not far from the nest so as to catch her in it. Also, that "if you merely want to save the life of the eyas it can be done, but it will leave the eyas psychologically disrupted and disturbed, which is a very unfortunate thing". So they may rehab tweety? We will have to wait and see.

Yes, I read that too...and BTW...the trapping has been moved to this afternoon....and I totally disagree with the comments made about the chick...After reading so many articles about baby falcons/condors/eagles, etc., I don't understand why it isn't possible to rear a hawk chick for release. Yet, it would require a great deal more work, but maybe that's the issue....Even if humans imprinted at a young age, could they not get the subadult to a falconer for training? Maybe hawks are totally different from other raptors...I only thought owls imprinted heavily on humans...but what do I know...we need to ask one of our rehabbers here...

Ooops...just saw your comment above, Beans....they CAN be raised for release...I thought so!!! Maybe they don't have the personnel at the zoo with that kind of training...but how much training do you need to put on a mask and make a sock puppet...you can do all of that while looking for an appropriate raptor center to take the baby...

One bit of good news for these birds: there are 4329 people watching the webcam at this minute, mounting by the second. This puts pressure on those managing the situation to work in the best interests of these hawks and means that a lot of people are deeply concerned. Just checked, 4393 as I type this.

All I can say about this , is they rehab everyday. they foster young ones into nests when they can.

What better thing is there than to put both together so adult can feed chick. If they had gone in rihgt away , they probably could have treated her then, and there.

I am afraid to say too much more , so I am praying they do the right thing.

Prayers for this little one and Violet

No word yet...and I think Violet is on the nest...I can't be for sure, but I think its her....I bet they are still sitting around a table somewhere trying to figure out what to do..

Obviously, this is a delicate operation, but if they hadn't have procrastinated then they could have gotten her before the baby hatched....geeeeeeeeeeeeeeez...so frustrating...

They have decided NOT to intervene at all yet. Since Violet can move her talons and use foot to hold the prey, she is not hindered. Possibly it is more swollen from all the sitting she has done incubating, and when she is more active now, and up more, it may go down. Or it may worsen. They will be watching, but she is not yet in a desperate way, and therefore it is too dangerous a risk now. (their comments not mine)

ps One of the experts was from Cornell too.

I just read on their site they are not going to do anything. They are leaving her alone.
