You took the words right out of my mouth, Beth...

so very tragic, and I'm sure those people must have really been so upset about what happened...

Thanks from me too, Ferenz for keeping an eye on all the kestrels!!!!

One more comment..what I find so interesting about this nest is how the babies are already self-feeding and so aggressive with food...I hope they are all getting enough to eat..

I'm sorry to hear the sad news Ferenz. Thank you for all the international coverage. Many of these cams will not load on my Mac- don't know why, so I doubly appreciate the pictures and information.

Thanks very much Ferenz for the news which is very sad.

Happily, Rebecca and Cirro's chicks were successfully ringed today. The details are:

Ortensia/Ribes
Ring No. H183011
Wing 58 mm
Weight 150 gm

Norfolk/Virginia
Ring No. H183010
Wing 56 mm
Weight 143 gm

Cervino/Grigna
Ring No. H183008
Wing mm 52 mm
Weight 137 gm

Beccodoro
Ring No. H183007
Wing 52 mm
Weight 120 gm

Gea
Ring No. H183010
Wing 50 mm
Weight 119 gm

They are very young but it was decided to ring them today as schools in Italy closed for the summer and it was the last chance for the primary school children to see the chicks at close quarters. Where there are two names, it's because it's not clear if the chick is male or female :suncon:
Wing length indicates hatching order.

The Falken-Förmchen have published a nice picture from Wendelin
and from a 2. falcon which was banded yesterday.

Note: I have to make a correction for my yesterday's posting concerning the name of the dead falcon. I missed what Falken-Förmchen member Zwirbel wrote yesterday at 8:00:50 CET on page 20 upper column:> ...Even that is nature - the little one made the wrong decision < and she didn't mean Wendelin but possibly the youngest one Noga...
http://falken-foermchen.com/smf/index.p ... c=1201.135

Todays postings say that Wendelin "Django" is in the nest and dominates the others as we know him.... and the pics are demonstrating it.

So much kestrel news to get caught up on!

    - Thanks to Ferenz for tracking the Berlin hatches, checking in on the almost grown up Aston chicks, showing the cute Muttenz chick banding pictures, and relaying the sad news from Muttenz about the loss of one of the younger chicks (most likely Noda). That really is a gang in the Muttenz nest, and Wendelin (the largest) surely is dominating his/her siblings!

    - Thanks to richardoe for the cute video of both the Groningen parents feeding their 3 chicks.

    - Thanks to Warbler for sharing the names and details of the banding of Rebecca and Cirro's chicks. It was interesting to see that one of the chicks, depending on whether its male or female, is named Norfolk or Virginia.

    - Thanks to SGB for the cute Belarus chick pictures. (I loved the last one of the chick looking into the cam.)

And more news to report . . .

At the Denmark nest, it looks as though 3 of the 6 chicks have fledged.

Image

And at the Sweden nest, the cam is finally back online and it looks as if there are 4 chicks in the nest.

Image

P.S. The Kestrel Nesting Calendar has just been updated.

Clip of one of last day of youngest in the nest (Mom still wanted to "help with the food" ...)

The Lesser Kestrels (or as the literal translation from Hebrew would be: Red Kestrels) in the school building in Elyakim, Israel are doing fine!

    in nest # 3 - 3 of the 4 have fledged
    in nest # 16 - all 3 have fledged
in nest # 10 - 2 are growing fast (hatched much later)

Some snapshots to follow later.

:hithere: Dont know if this is the right place, but I checked under IT nests for Rome, and didnt see a page for misc for Rebecca e Cirro's postings? Feel free to edit and move to proper page if necessary, just let me know for future reference where I should post their pics.

Here are a couple of these cuties. One has a wing in his mouth and did not feel like sharing with his siblings! They chased him trying to get it to no avail LOL

Image
They chased him trying to steal it but...

Image
He was not sharing!

In fact, Im wondering if it is somehow stuck! It is still on him, maybe mom has to yank it out?
Edit: Yes, I think it is stuck, he is in back trying to get it out and cant. Hope mom comes back soon, it has already been a while...

Leelee...I think we were watching at the same time....I think its stuck too...A couple of times, one of the siblings tried to pull it away....I think its gonna take a parent to yank it off....I certainly hope whatever it is, is not affecting the chicks airway....it was moving around ok while I was watching...

There have been comments on our forum about the wing in the chick's gullet but, as you say, it doesn't seem to be affecting him. Let's hope that Mum can pull it out when she comes back ...
