Many thanks to Ferenz and Bosuil for all the kestrel chick news!

I just looked in at the Rehovot nest in Israel. Chick #5 still hasn't fledged. She/he is resting in the nest box, and mom is keeping watch on the edge of the nest box.

We have a new cam on the Italian forum :egg5:

. It's 'Mary and Bert - the balcony kestrels' (thread 'Mary e Bert i gheppi sul Balcone).
Here's part of what the owner of the balcony wrote after joining the forum...

"I live on the 7th of 8 floors and I've always had families of pigeons on the balcony. ... I really dislike pigeons so I do everything I can to drive them away. One day recently when I was trying to get rid of the birds, I realised that one was very different from the usual pigeons and, as it kept going back to a corner of the balcony where the planters are empty, I did some research and found it wasn't a pigeon but a falcon - a kestrel! I had no idea such a falcon existed. That really changed the situation!! I continued to drive the pigeons away but the kestrels, who'd found a secluded position, started to lay eggs and, in a week, there were 5. At this point, I decided that we should make films, take photos and log the event ... Counting the days from when the eggs were laid, they should hatch anyday now."

This was posted on 31 May and, on 1 June, 3 chicks hatched :egghatch:

with another hatching overnight :thumbup

The fifth and last chick hatched a short while ago, about 36 hours after No. 4 and a couple of days after Nos 1-3.
