Penny - Red Phase Female
Parker - Red Phase Male

He is a little smaller and a little darker than her. The eye bars of the sides of their faces are the biggest difference.
Her's are much broader and lighter than his. He also has darker ear tufts

On the cam site are several videoclips to look at. From the last one, "28-3 Kiekeboe" have I taken these shots. On videos you can see maybe better that owlett, who is peeping there.

Video: Eurasian Eagle Owls Feed their Babies

This Eagle Owl family has at least two chicks. The oldest chick was a week old on March 31.

The Eagle Owl is the largest European owl species, with a length of 60 - 75 cm (2' - 2' 6") and wingspan of 160 cm (5' 3"). A non-migratory raptor, this owl stays in its area year round. When a pair of Eagle Owls manages to breed successfully for a number of years, it can be assumed that the quality of its habitat is good.

In the Netherlands, they mainly breed in stone quarries (no bare cliffs here). Parts of these quarries aren't in use anymore, thus creating quiet areas for these shy birds, who are sensitive to disturbance. Protective measures need to be taken in the other areas where activities still take place (also recreation areas).

The camera, with its telelens, is at a safe distance. The cam can be controlled remotely, so as not to disturb the owl. Infrared light is used at night.

This pair of Eagle Owls has been breeding in this stone quarry for several years, usually on the same ledge. In 2007 they had 2, in 2008 3 and in 2009 one young. Last year, 3 eggs had been laid, but the owl was chased off the nest by ill-behaved youth. Probably 2 eggs cooled down too much, causing the embryos to die.

Its menu consists of Stock doves, Brown rats, Corvids, Hedgehogs, Rabbits, and occasionally birds of prey and owls. There are currently seven breeding pairs in the area.

Incubation period is February – June, one clutch, 2- 4 eggs. The incubation time is about 33 days. The young fledge after 4 weeks. They can’t fly very well, and they stay near the nest. By 9 weeks they can fly well.
