Video: Welcome Home Starr Ranch Barn Owls

I call the video "Welcome Home", but they've been home for quite some time!

Here's a gift Monsieur brought to Madame:

Can still hear the creek running but it's not as bad today. Boy, they got a lot of rain! Hope they get to dry out for a bit. Only a little over a week till we should see the first hatch!

Video: We Both Need a Break

"Owls are emotionally delicate, even iin the wild. For example, owls mate for life, and when an owl's mate dies, he doesn't necessarily go out and find another partner. Instead, he might turn his head to face the tree on which he's sitting and stare fixedly in a deep depression until he dies. Such profound grief is indicate of how passionatel owls can feel and how devoted they are to their mates."

Someone posted a hummingbird here. She was probably after insects and/or ants.

I worried about the band, too. But I saw that it moved easily when she was playing with it. This is a USFWS band and it is specific for Barn Owls and has its own number sequence. Only licensed facilities put on these bands. And staff are highly trained and very careful.

When we were banding what appeared to be a Cackling Goose (looks like a small Canada Goose) at the bird hospital, the manager decided that the band didn't turn freely, so she removed it. She had to confirm the type of goose and use a band specific for that type. I don't know which species it turned out to be, but we returned the feisty little goose to the aviary, unbanded. She was probably banded with the correct band the next day and released.

Yes, there is something.... but I don't think I can stay up late enough to watch.... So perhaps we'll see the first chick in the morning. :)
