Some think it hatched but did not survive. If the egg that's left is #7 then it's not due to hatch until Wednesday.

ETA - Hmm, I wonder if it's possible one of them got broken open by accident, thus the chick was not ready and did not live. Possible I guess, with 4 other chicks trying to get fed.

Last night, Pete found the fifth chick and only one egg. So we may end up with six chicks. Dads seems to be a good provider, so hopefully, all of the chicks will be fed, even the smallest.

Update from Pete...

I just received a generous offer to match up to $250 of contributions received by Friday 2/19 5PM PST.
If you are thinking about contributing, now would be a good time. A sincere thank you goes to all of you who have been contributing.
It’s really appreciated and is really helping. PD

Well ... whoever thought one of them died (aHem, Pete included!) was wrong! Trish got a great video showing all 7 owlets!!!! Watch carefully towards the end ... the little one pops out from under at about 5 o'clock.

Owls, owls everywhere! There's no counting them or keeping track of who is who ... it's impossible!! :)

Arrow points to one of the smaller ones ... #6 I think.

Alas early this morning as reported on the Star ranch forum, "Tiny" passed. I guess mom could not feed him and hunt for the other larger older owlets who are more able to rip apart the rodents she delivers

Posted by Ovolemio on the Starr Ranch blog...

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to an owl to tear.

Isn't that the truth...we always know its going to happen, but we watch anyway...it is so hard for the youngest...I just wish there were some way to rescue the youngest of a clutch, fatten it up, then return it to the nest...why did barn owls evolve to this method anyway...we need to prepare outselves for this to happen in future nests...

I was at San Marcos when i heard that things were bad. I saw one of the sibs standing over Tiny and went back to San Marcos. I knew that if I watched, I would be upset. Tiny ended up feeding a sib. From dust you are made--to dust you shall return. Nothing is wasted.

:( I'm happy too not being there and watching... even I know it's not very odd at these nests... however
