This is happening the same way as with the young osprey (Koo) in Finland with the broken leg whose nest had a webcam. They banded her & put her back in the nest, but there was an uproar from the public about them not doing anything to help her. She did learn to fly, but got into a situation that she couldn't get out of. Some hunters found her & got help for her, but after x-raying her legs, it was determined that the bones in both legs were brittle & therefore she couldn't be helped. She was then euthanized. :(

A lot of us people would love to throttle Louise Joubert & her animals rights
Copied from Graham page on facebook. If you've watched Djuma you know who he is & how much he has done for the reserve.
"As someone mentioned earlier, elephants usually die of old age in the wild, as they have almost no predators. They have a very complex social structure, and actually need to go through the end together ... for the benefit of those that survive, rather than those that die. By euthanizing we rob this herd of this process, to some extent ... but I ... Read Moreguess that at least its 'humane' (sarcasm).
The applying of humanity to animals is just not fair to them. I hope I do not witness this sort of animal rights activism again ... :(
@Louise Joubert and Animal Rights Africa, I hope you all sleep soundly tonight knowing that you help 'steal' an old lady's right to die with her herd and say her goodbyes properly.
Sometimes the greater pain is not the physical one."

"I think that universal Health Care for all wild animals is a must ... NOW!
I also am tired of the fact that some animals seem to think that it is acceptable to undermine the rights of others ... by killing them, stealing their nests and females. I have also been led to believe that there are some animals that ignore their children after birth and ... Read Morethis is totally unacceptable. We need the ARA and Louise Joubert to explain how we as humans are going to collectively ensure that locusts only have as many children as they can care for, and then start building orphanages for the rest.
They are naive and silly to think that the natural world runs on our rules ... thank God nature has a more robust management plan than the one that Sanwild and the ARA have in mind."

From one of the rangers
"I doubt Louise and ARA are unhappy. I suspect they'll have a dop and think they saved the ellie some suffering and mark it down as a triumph. Wonder if all old ellies will get obligatory dental check to determine when to put them down."

I feel great anger towards these stupid people that have created this unpleasant and unneeded controversy.

That is exactly what I thought when reading about the old lady being euthanised, it's just NOT right to intervene in a natural process. It's not a pet, for crying out loud.

Elephants are very social, they mourn their dead. Now the herd is robbed of that and that is very sad.

What will these people want next? Start a program to make the Lions eat grass? The animals in these game reserves are WILD animals, not Zoo animals.
So we humans have to take a completely different approach to them. All we should do is make sure that these animals keep their natural habitat where they can do what they are supposed to do.
Live and die as part of the whole wildlife community, without human intervention.
Haven't we humans destroyed enough already? Time and time again it turns out for the worse when we try to intervene and change the natural course of life. Let's wake up and leave it to mother Earth to set the rules.
I could write a lot more but will not do it . . . . .

DEF; on Graham's page & on Hancock, Skipper had posted a letter that she has sent this "idiot person" Her e-mail is given too so people can sound off their outrage. I don't think I'll do that because then she'll have my e-mail. I really feel for the poor family & the youngster.Waiting for more info on facebook. I wonder did they chase away the rwest of the herd just so they could get her. They say she was alone. before the herd circled around her. Hopefully 2morrow happier thoughts here & pics.

That's wonderful news, eguoc! I'm glad she has improved for the moment, and hopefully when it is time for her to pass on, she will be allowed to do so with her herd in the "elephant" way...

I am sóóó happy that common sense has prevailed! :thumbup And she seems to be much better now.
What a relief that the vet(s) decided to let nature take it's course.
She now can live her life as intended and when her time comes she will go the natural way, hopefully surrounded by her herd. :rainbow

Thanks, eiguoc, for the lovely pictures today and for the great news about the elephant that recovered on her own. (I'd been afraid to visit this topic when that elephant was so sick. It was very worried and distressed to see her in such sad shape then.)

I got distracted. My youngest daughter is off to Turkey, for a vacation. And I tracked her flight take off with Google Earth. It's an overlay for all the plane movements around Schiphol.

Anyway, it was wonderful to see the old Lady with her calf. Every minute the little one can still be with his/her mother is precious.
She can still teach her last baby a lot about Elephant life. The baby will be better prepared for the life ahead.

And then there was the surprising appearance of Karula and the two cubs. I couldn't resist and took some screenshots (143 . . . )

My PB album of WE

A slide show of the screenshots on Youtube .

That Manyeleti Male is so beautiful now. Image eiguoc
Realy grown up.

These brothers were october 2008 at Gowrie pan with a prey nearby.
They came to the pan for a drink and met a few Dagga boys there.
Never forget how they had to make way for those big boys.
Image
Teenagers then (19-10-2009)
Januari 2009 seen at Nkorho pan and one had a broken backleg.
Pics from Karen/Jacques on the Boma
After that not seen again together.
The one left alone now has been seen with one of the Nkuhuma's (Snaggletooth) in Mars 2009 at Djuma.
Reports from Rangers are confusing. sometimes
But my archived pics tell me what is seen by me ;)
Happy he is still there. 8-)
