Ditto ..... I can't thank you enough for the vids Mary Ann! I haven't had time this week. Poor Mom and Dad ... I think they just don't know what to do.

Travis on the 'chat' made a visit to the nest about 2 weeks ago ... he saw Mom and Dad, another adult and a juvie. It seems to me they've either had too much trouble with intruders ... or the drought/food shortage has caused problems ... ie: lack of food and/or intruders also looking for food. Either way ... no little ones coming from those eggs. :(

Stranger than strange..Its as if the "gotta incubate" switch has been turned back on...what a mystery!!!

How normal looking is this

and then another switch

and by the way...nobody was on the eggs at sunup

JudyB posted a lengthy post on WOW. She said at one point yesterday one of the adults pushed one of the eggs out of the bowl, and then proceeded to incubate the other one. My guess would be that if they were having intruder issues - the intruder has now moved on.

At this point I wish some Crows would come and get rid of the eggs... as awful as that sounds. At least Mom and Dad could then move on. :tissue:

I checked several times today (sorry, no pics) but they pulled the egg back into the nest bowl...a few times, no one was on the eggs....

Didn't check at the end of the day to see if both eggs were still there or if anybody came in for the night...

From the chat ... they have been back and forth. Someone mentioned this evening that they could see Mom on the nest after dark. So I snapped a pic and lightened it ... sure enough, she's there.

Sutton has posted a new update today, finally ... but it's lengthy so I'm not going to copy it over here. (chatters got told to cut out the chit-chat!).

Well, how's this for a change of pace....Video by crayj46....

Here is the description:

Thanks Sutton. Basically the nest was abandoned by the eagles last week sometime, the eggs were due to begin hatching around january 16, intruders kept resident pair from tending the nest, eggs were non viable, 1 egg fell apart a few days back, this one remained. A Great Horned Owl has been coming by the nest for several days, tonight it began incubating the egg and turning it.

My first impression would almost be to say ... how do we know the Owl didn't get rid of the Eagle egg and lay her own during the night?? Yikes! Gonna have to check the cam tomorrow.

Here's what happened..

Quite a few rounds of vocalizations before she left. I would like to think that the owl that returned and landed on the rim of the nest was the male...but, I have no clue..

I was so hoping for a GHO egg....I wonder what is going on...

From the website

6 February 2013: You may have been watching the Great Horned Owl that has adopted the abandoned eagle egg in the Sequoyah eagle nest. This is an interesting phenomena, but not completely surprising. Female birds (and some males) are stimulated to incubate eggs, when influenced by hormones, and often may incubate almost any eggs in the vicinity when in that hormonal condition. Most females will not incubate eggs at other times. It is likely that this owl had either lost her own clutch of eggs, but is still in the incubation phase of reproductive condition, or has come into “reproductive readiness” but has not bred. In either case she might be stimulated by the sight of the egg to incubate. This “incubating drive” will likely dissipate within a few days or could possibly continue for longer, even until the dead eagle egg explodes.

I think that possibly was the male - can't be positive - but it looked smaller, feet looked smaller.

Again...I forgot to check at sunrise...but, she's been there almost all day..

...Rolling the egg..

If that was a male, I am hoping she can lay an egg of her own....if not, then I hope that eagle egg falls apart so that she doesn't try to incubate forever...
