I thought it was very quick SGB. I've seen them go for quite some time on the first egg. But I have never seen blood on the egg like that before. I'm sure it happens, but without a zoom in with the camera like we had today .. we probably just don't see it.

I have gathered fresh chicken eggs, Patti, and while they are not "clean", I haven't seen blood. Of course they are popping out one a day!

I thought it went quick too..I wasn't referring to the speed..just how uncomfortable she looked. In doing a quick (not thorough) search this morning, I found this info. Its talking about a chicken, but I would imagine it could apply to any bird.

"When a hen has just begin laying, there can occasionally be a little blood on the egg shell, but it is usually no cause for concern. Eventually her vent gets used to stretching when she lays, and becomes very elastic. However, at first it does occasionally happen that with a large egg she might bleed just a little. And it can happen, too, to an older hen if she lays an egg larger than she is used to."

also...."the egg chute is lined with blood vessels and it's easy for a young layer to break one"...and "...may have been a little tense in the cold air- heat tends to dilate the chute. Just a momentary shiver could have popped a blood vessel."

Let's hope that Mom (can't remember if she has a name) is okay. That was my concern. :loveheart:

Thank you skygirlblue & if you don't mind I'm going to deliver that to the mods.

So dad brings in this small tree/big branch and messes with it all over & around the egg. He steps on the egg a bunch. The chatters are going crazy & one video maker on SS posts that the egg has been punctured (I just love my job)

Here's an edited version with a later close up of the egg on the end. Eggs are tough. (Except for in CA where there is still DDT in the water) Remember your intruder video skygirlblue?
