I wish I had better news, but no official sighting of Larry or Lucy. There were 2 eagles that flew right by the nest later in the day, and one kept going and the other went and perched downstream. My ground reporter said it looked like it was perched for the night, and it was a smaller eagle. Wishful thinking that it is Larry, but no conclusive report. Thanks for hanging in there today. It is a trying time for everyone, and this kind of event is not seen a lot but we do know it does happen. I stopped twice today and nothing.

Talon...thanks for taking the time to check in with all of us. It most definitely is a very trying and stressful time for all, especially for you, the kids, and all intimately involved with this nest.

I know these things happen, but I really can't recall personally watching a nest take over...displaced partners, yes, but not the resident pair!!

I'm still hoping for the best here...sending prayers and hugs to Lucy and Larry and all you guys!!

I wonder how quickly the L's will be able to build a new nest...or maybe they will get lucky and find an unoccupied one..egg lay for Lucy last year was 3/9.

I was at site a bit ago and Larry and new female landed on nest and a third eagle threatened nest and flew past. Female took off after it. Do not think it was Lucy.

Cannot be mad at Larry. I am sure Lucy is O.K.

Larry obviously chased off other male and it is natural; for him to hook up with this female.

Lucy , it seems, left , on her own , she probably knew she could not defend nest. I have faith in Lucy. she is a survivor. Larry looked after her and would still be with her if this new female had not threatened. We have much to be thankful for. Larry saved Lucy, Lucy can go on.

Look at San Jose, Ferdinand defeated EC and Ec remained in area not far away.
this I pray for Lucy.

I say all of this with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, and a heavy heart. I tried stay away but I knew Talon would have news today.

Be safe Lucy, you gave me strength , and inspiration. forever in my heart

Bev...I do agree with you 100%. I think we tend to forget that the #1 goal for any of these creatures is to procreate and pass along their genes. I was just hoping that our "Ideal, 'loving' couple" would be immune to this.

I think Lucy is a survivor as well..she has proven that, but we can't rule out the possibility that she and this female "met". I am still sad for her, especially being so close to egg laying time. I just pray she didn't have one on its way. If she did, she'll just have to drop it and move on..

I hope, eventually, that someone will spot her so that at least we know she is ok...she has been through so much, she deserves to have a good life. I was hoping it would be with Larry....

me too SGb. I sound tough but not. I am really sick about all of this but I have to remember , it is nature at hand. I was hoping for a fairy tale ending also. Talon parents live not far away so they will all keep checking for her. No news is good news sometimes

Hugs all around

I know this is nature but it makes me so sad. There's a YouTube video posted by crayj46 on
FB that shows an Eagle swooping on the 2 in the nest...there's speculation it could be Lucy.

It was not Lucy. I was watching. this one had talons on both legs. It was slowed down and that part pulled out

Do not know who it was.

Marge Gibson shared a wonderful experience on Eagle Friends as a way to support us all during this difficult time.

I hope this works since its a closed group: (If not, I'll copy/paste her words here)

The link should have taken you to Marge's post with pics (at least it did for me..)

anyway, here are her words:

Given the recent situation with Lucy and Larry, I thought it might be a good time to write a few lines on a former patient of mine. I am in the process of writing a paper on this case, but wanted to share a few photos to offer everyone a glimpse of what is possible for an eagle. Before you panic at the sight of the photos…please know the story has a wonderful ending. The disability looks horrific, but that is just that, “looks” and nothing more.
A shortened version of the story is…On Mother’s Day 2006 I received a call from a frantic woman to inform me her son and his friends had a bald eagle in their trunk. We arrived to find an unconscious Bald eagle in the trunk of a car with 3 teenage boys in attendance. They had “clubbed her” it seems as a way to “restrain” her so they could remove fishing line from her body. Clubbing an animal usually results in death. The boys may have been unaware of that. I took the poor eagle in my arms, and held her during the 30 miles to REGI. A short time before we arrived the eagle stirred. She was alive! It was weeks in intensive care and finally she was able to stand and then eat on her own. She was a stunning adult female but had brain injury. She was amazing and fought every day to recover. When she was admitted she “looked” perfect in every way, but in short order parts of her once gorgeous beak fell away. Still she fought on and used the beak as if there was nothing wrong.
Every wildlife facility and expert I consulted with on this case advised I euthanize her. We listen to our patients here at REGI and allow them to be our guide. This bird never showed pain or agony after she began to recover, in fact if anything we noticed a stronger spirit and determination.
After nearly a year in rehabilitation and after we tested every aspect of her health, conditioning and her now unusual beak for strength, winter hardiness and ability to use it with perfection, we released her on May 5, 2007 at the REGI compound after a year of rehabilitation. We evaluated every aspect of her condition before making this decision.
We never forgot her. I remained confident that she was doing just fine, but there was no solid proof of that…UNTIL a photo showed up on one of the eagle sites. I recognized her in a heartbeat but had to search old files for my photos. I was able to access them a few days ago and guess what? Old “Notch-beak”, now famous in the Quad Cities is indeed my former patient.
This is the first I have written about this amazing bird. I have yet to thank the wonderful photographers that sent me the photos. This winter has been so difficult. It has put me so far behind, but I will catch up and tell them of my gratitude. Never lose faith in what is possible in the wild world. Just when things seem the most dismal it will surprise you. We do not know what will happen with Lucy and Larry. Their life is complicated but it is their life and we are just privileged viewers.

She had also posted several pics of this eagle...OH MY...even today, its beak is unusual, to say the least!!!

thanks SGb

Andthat is what gives me hope for Lucy. Larry nursed her back to health and gave her a chance at life. Maybe not the life we so hoped for, but then, maybe it will be a better one for her.

still tears in my eyes , and love in my heart, for I do believe in miracles

With limited time I am simply going to post the link, but Larry and the new female mated this morning. This was not just "practice." I will have my eyes scanning constantly for Lucy, and no news is good news. Yes, my parents live right there and they too will be my eyes when I can't be there.

Lucy was simply a supervisor this season, and didn't really seemed interested in procreating. That is only from observation on cam and do not know what might have taken place off camera.
