Thanks loza for these images - what a family! I haven't taken the time yet to watch this cam (afraid I'll get hooked ;-) ).

Good news :hatchegg: from Alta Murgia Lesser Kestrels:

Hatching time before or close to 16:00 (via Facebook - "Lipu Gravina")

Image
Around 18:00 (Italian = ME time) - chick visible

Image
A while ago (00:30) - an(other?) egg shell visible

:girlluv: Ah, so nice to hear the news and see that beautiful picture of the second chick at Alta Murgia. Thanks, Bosuil.

Thanks too to loza for all the wonderful pictures at Kwidzyn. The chicks certainly do look ready to fledge at any moment, and the king and queen are to be commended for their wonderful care of six chicks this year.

In other news, it looks as if 3 of the chicks in the Berlin nest have fledged. But it's hard to know for sure as one or more of the chicks might just be out of sight in the nest.

Image

And at the Matura nest, the Lesser Kestrel male has really been helping the female with nesting duties. I found him patiently feeding the little chick earlier today.

Credit where credit is due, it isn't my snapshot (found it on the Italian forum, I hadn't "snapped" the 2 yet)! A shame the lens is so dirty :girlsad3: - I see a spider at work sometimes, it may also be grease from the tailfeathers touching the lens when the birds changed position while incubating.

Whaw, great catch, Catbird - I hadn't seen the male feeding yet! Just remember him dangling large preys (lizard ...) in front of the tiny chick and esp. the very first prey - when he'd been watching the chick hatch and after 40, 50 min. - given the female didnot arrive - left it alone and went out to catch something to eat and returned with a beetle, couldn't figure out how to feed it and ate it himself!

The 2nd calenderyear male was on a visit again this morning:

:girlyes: loza - Great news about the first Kwidzyn kestrel fledging! And it's nice to see the 5 kestrels left in the nest all settled down for the night. I watched a bit earlier today, and everything was quite hectic with the kids flapping their wings and running into each other.

Bosuil - So that's what the 2nd year intruder male looks like at the Matura nest. The resident female didn't seem too bothered to have him there, so perhaps he is just a curious visitor. I certainly hope so.

Bad news at the Simon King nest in England. Here's what is posted on the Web site:

Sadly, it is looking like the eggs in this year’s clutch are infertile. One of the 3 eggs broke a few days after it was due to hatch, revealing no developed embryo. We expect the others to go the same way. It is common for relatively long lived birds like kestrels (which may live for 15 years or so in the wild) to have infertile first broods. Hopefully, having established a territory and shown her commitment to her duties, this female will have more luck next year. Her mate (who can be distinguished by his grey head and tail) is still bringing the female food and occasionally sitting on the eggs. We expect this activity to end by July, but with one of the pair being so young (probably just a year old) it is very hard to know when they will finally abandon hope of raising a family. Kestrels only have one brood a year, so this will signal the end of their attempt to raise a family in 2014.

Thanks for the Kwidzyn photos and videos, loza. I wonder if we'll see another fledge or two today. :egg16:

Germany - Berlin

Only one chick is visible in the nest. I'm assuming that the other 4 chicks have fledged.

Image

Italy - Alta Murgia (Ginger & Fred)

There are still just two chicks for the Lesser Kestrels here.

Image

Italy - San Clemente

It looks as if one of the 4 chicks has fledged.

Image

Switzerland - Lausen

The chicks have really grown since I last checked in on them. They should be fledging within a couple of days.

:egg12: Oops, I was wrong earlier today about the 4th kestrel fledging in Berlin. When I checked the cam later today, there were still 2 kestrel chicks in the nest box.
