I was trying to get a picture of Phoebe's two eggs, but of course she came back just as I was taking the picture. I'm glad to see that everything's still going well here!

Thanks, beans, for the news of the first hatch and the video! I sure hope that everything works out this time for Phoebe and her chicks. I'm taking the first hatch on Mother's Day as a good sign!

:egghatch: :egghatch: Second hatch for Pheobe!

According to the site, #2 hatched just before dark yesterday. They're calling the first chick Hope (hatched May 9) and the second chick Hoku (hatched May 10).

It looks like Hope and Hoku are almost ready to fledge. And it looks like dear Phoebe was finally successful this year in raising two healthy chicks. :loveheart2:

Very sad...poor Phoebe. The crows have not been a problem before, but they sure have been this year. :-(

Yes, this is just so sad! Poor Phoebe is right - this has not been a good year for her and her nesting efforts.

I've got my fingers crossed that at least Hoku can successfully fledge.

I needed to make a video of Hoku's renesting, as it is very special.

Image

Video: Hoku is Gently Returned to the Nest

Before he is returned (not shown in video), you could hear Phoebe’s frantic calls and the whirr of her wings as she searched for her chicks. After Hoku is returned, you can hear her once more (you may need to turn up your volume).

Before I started training as a wildlife rehabilitator, I foolishly believed wild birds (and other wildlife) had easier lives. Now I know how misguided I was. Their lives are very hard, filled with drama of the worst kind, and survival rates are low. And yet they persevere. We can help by preserving their habitats.

Re-nesting a baby bird is the best thing to do. Mother can take much better care of him than rehabilitators can. The public brings in many baby birds to wildlife hospitals. If it’s a fledgling on the ground, best to keep one’s distance and let the parents take care of him. Fledglings spend time on the ground, as they are getting used to flying. Just keep the cats and other predators away, please.

Yesterday, the female Cooper's Hawk in this area took one of my Lesser Goldfinches. It was a male, eating from the cylinder bird feeder. The birds are enjoying the suet. During baby bird season and winter, they really appreciate it.

I like this view of him in the video because you can see his beautiful little tail.

Wow, feeding backwards. As long as I've been watching Phoebe, I don't ever remember that before.
