We need to post as many pictures as possible! In about two weeks, the whole family may move on. I am so happy with this cam because we have loons at the bird hospital. Common Loons, Red-throated Loons, and Pacific Loons. Thanks to this cam, I get to see them develop and grow up. They have very long feet, are excellent swimmers and divers, and can give you a nasty stab with their beak if you aren't handling them properly. I am very fond of these birds, and now I know more about them!

Update from the camhost-Jean

The adults and chick by Jean_T on 06/27/2010
Will spend less and less time on the nest as time goes by, perhaps a few more days to view them here. Afterward, they will spend the rest of the summer on the water, the chick hiding and resting in amongst the lily pads between feeding sessions with the adults. The chick will leave the lake around mid- to late-August, and the adults will migrate in September. The timing is different for the Common Loons, in that those chicks take longer to mature, so they leave their lakes after the adults migrate. If the Common Loon chicks hatch late in the season, they may not make it out before their lakes freeze up. After the live streaming is turned off here, I will continue to take snapshots which Cornell can post...

Well...the family has not been seen today at the nestsite, they might have left for good...

Here is the last photo I have - little one's foot, taken last night.

Swam By

Jun 28, 2010 -
Though we have not seen the chick in the nest for a while, we got this image as he swam by briefly.
At almost two weeks old, this chick is just barely starting to develop his juvenile plumage.

Sad news from JeanT -camhost- on 07/23/2010 03:49AM
Pacific Loon report.

As you may recall, one chick disappeared when it went for its first swim, presumably taken by a Bald Eagle. The last time I saw the remaining loon chick was on July 14, almost one month old. It was feeding constantly and growing quite large. The next time I checked with the shore camera on July 20, I noticed one of the adults staying at a spot near the north edge of the lake for quite a few minutes and looking toward the bulrushes, rather odd behavior. When I zoomed in, I could see a grey lump in the bulrushes near the adult. The adult finally swam away, fast, toward the other end of the lake and resumed normal activity. That same evening there were four adults on the lake, swimming together peacefully, and three the next day. This afternoon, when there were only two adults and still no chick visible, my husband and I canoed to the spot where I had seen the grey "lump" and immediately found the juvenile loon carcass floating at the edge of the bulrushes. I bagged it and took it to USGS where the local loon biologists have offices. I dropped it off at the lab where a necropsy will be done. I'll post again as soon as I get any results. Unfortunately, this is the first year that we have lost both chicks since the Connors Lake Loon Cam was started in 2003. We'll try again next year.

Video: Canada Geese on the Mohawk River

Earlier this year we drove up to Oregon and stayed with friends who built a little house on the Mohawk River, just outside of Springfield.

Canada Geese were relaxing next to the Mohawk River on a summer's morning. Several families have formed a group. At least one adult is always on guard. Finally, the signal is given, and they all return to the water.

Branta canadensis

Beth,
I was just reading Larry's blog I didn't know that some of the Loons had transmitters on them.
I'm going to work but I'm going to go back and read it close and see where they are.

:thumbup UPDATE AT REGI ON THE LOONS :thumbup

Image
( Photo: This Common Loon and a second loon not picture are both doing well.
They will soon be taking a private jet to the warm waters of Florida!)

We have exciting news on the Common Loon patients that have been with us for
several weeks. They are both doing well. Both are gaining weight and while they
continue to be tube fed to augment the calorie intake they are ready to be fishing
on their own again. Their stories are in the blog a few weeks ago, but the loon with
the fish hook is doing spectacularly! No one could have predicted this case would end
up so wonderfully. She is having another x-ray this afternoon.
That will be her last check before she sees the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico.
The other loon that came in with poisoning continues to improve daily and is also
making great strides. Now we just hope the Gulf of Mexico is healthy for them.
A generous company from Wausau, WI has offered to transport the loons for
us to Florida. We are so grateful!
