St Mary's Higham, UK: they have turned the cam off because the parents are not feeding the remaining chicks. number of surviving chicks unknown.

Adastral Park, UK: Cam is offline, but 2 separate DVR's suggest that either the sick chick has died and been removed by parents OR removed by wildlife for intervention. Either way, #3 is not in the box.

I ran across a peregrine cam for Reston, VA this morning when I was looking for a Boston link. It appears they have 3 chicks. I took a video of it.

Edit: Well, I figured it out. I took a picture of 4 eggs this Spring that supposedly were in Boston. SBG got the scroop on the cam--it was actually in VA. 3 chicks are old enough to be banded!

Last screenshot from this morning shows 2 dead chicks and one lethargic, not responding to a (feeble) attempt to feed by the female.

So many chicks dying. I am thinking some sort of parasite. Just too many to be blamed on not enough food etc.

:15heartbeat: More difficulties at the Miami eagle nest of Ron and Rose. Unfortunately, R5 their youngest eaglet started flapping his wings while standing on the edge of the nest at 6:32 this morning and lost it's footing and dropped down and could be seen clinging to the outside of the nest with no way to climb back up and into it. R5 dropped out of view in the next minute. R5 was rescued and taken for examination and is okay from their chat. The plan is to return R5 to the nest this afternoon. R4 remains in the nest. Rose has not been seen at the nest for more than 24 hours, but hopefully she will return as she did her last disappearance of over 2 1/2 days.

(for the calendar)

Palmyra Cove Banding on 5/16:

Females: BN/14, BN/15, BN/16
Male: BH/61

I'm not sure of the band color. Maybe B/BL?

Also, looks like there are 5 hatches at Burlington Bristol Bridge.

From Facebook...Bobby Horvath on 5/16.:

The passing of a Legend

Pale Male

Image

I'm sorry to have to report the end of an era that Pale Male passed away tonight in our care. Yesterday morning Urban Park Ranger Baisley rescued him while sick and grounded in Central Park. I was in north Queens at the time and picked him up and transported him directly to our vet who did bloodwork and x rays. I took him home after where he remained extremely lethargic and weak and unable to stand . We treated with supportive care , he ate a small meal and received fluids and medication . We hoped for any improvement but sadly it was not meant to be. The bloodwork results well have tomorrow and maybe that will give some cause of his illness . Pale Male was the inspiration for thousands not only in New York City but worldwide to begin birding or photography. Some were just amateur others became professional photographers. Most were just local residents or tourists who just wanted an opportunity to get a glimpse of this famous hawk. The Palemale.com site operated by Lincoln Karim took on international interest documenting his day to day activity. Pale Male was a celebrity but more so became a animal model for environmental conservation for urban wildlife. A group of devoted hawkwatchers grew into a family in Central Park and eventually expanded to monitoring other city hawk nests. His genetics surely still live on in some of his many offspring in the city. He lived at least 30 years in a challenging environment that NYC poses and there will never be another hawk as well known and loved as he was. Some of these photos were provided by Jean Shum who I contacted for some photos to post of healthier happier times to remember him by. There are too many other photographers to mention but they know who they are who also closely followed him thru the years and shared their work publicly for thousands to be able to experience his adventures and raising his babies on 5th Avenue and then teaching them survival in Central Park. We feel it was better he was found and cared for than if he passed somewhere never to be found and unknown circumstances. Hopefully it was simply age related issues and it was just his time after an amazing unmatchable lifespan.

UPDATE : Our Vet reported the blood results came back revealing severe renal failure likely due to age. It was beyond treating or reversing the condition.

If you have never visited Palemale.com, you are in for a treat and the most amazing photography.

This hawk was a legend....and I can even remember writing a letter to the mayor of NY asking for rat poisons to be banned...

Pale Male :tissue:

I couldn't find San Francisco on the calendar (no cam), but here are the banding number (in case I don't know where to look for it).

The band numbers are females: 05/BC, 10/BC, 11/BC, and the male: 42/BA. Unfortunately, the male died post banding probably due to an infection and his inability to eat. (Thanks to Bev.)
