11/2 Today was the day we did the dastardly deed. This year mostly because of enormous time commitments to the Owl Center, Owl Festival, and publishing research, Rusty and Iris were moved to a permit classification that does not allow breeding. (This can be changed in the future.) That means we had to remove their eggs, and we chose to swap them out with replica eggs so Iris can continue incubating as her instincts tell her to. The whole swap took 7 minutes, and Rusty and Iris don't seem to notice they've got fake eggs (although they are much smaller than Rusty and Iris' eggs!) I can assure you, this was not a fun thing to do--I felt terrible removing the eggs.

Replica eggs,

The big white eggs are those from Alice the Great Horned Owl last year and the smaller ones are the replicas.

We candled the eggs after we removed them. One had no noticeable development (5 days after laying). This one showed a few blood vessels. and a small dark spot (8 days after laying). I'm glad they weren't any more developed. We waited to remove the eggs until we were sure she wouldn't lay any more so we only had to disturb them once.
