Harriet Defends Herself And Her Nest 09-28-15
Harriet has excellent survival skills and uses her fierceness, intelligence and experience for all of us to witness today. She draws the sub adult away from her nest and then deters and chases him away from her. Our eagles live free and for the goal of propagating their species. A wise woman told me today that watching eagles live their lives makes their successes that much sweeter and brings home how fragile life can be. Be safe Harriet, heal well Ozzie and return soon M15.

I am like everyone else. I wanted and hoped for a fairy tale ending. But, watching pefa for the last few years, I know that is not how it works. Oz is in a safe place and will not get set free. It is wrong to nurse an animal to health and it may or may not be able to surive, (toes and claws needed to defend and eat with). What happens will make for a new season and some day Harriet will be replaced with a new couple to raise their chicks.

As indicated in the first photo, Ozzie has two broken toes, one in each foot.
The good news is, he does not have any additonal broken bones or fractures.
We should know in the coming days how long he will need to recover at CROW.
We will continue to keep you posted. As always, thanks for your support.

Also, I keep remembering what you said a few weeks ago - comparing this nest to E4K... I didn't realize how serious and deadly territory/nest/mate battles can be, and that this is not uncommon.

Thank You for the photo, I am human and can't go over to SWFL to see the pain in chat and f/b. I watch too many cameras, to get sad when I am at work. But, that was my first eagles nest, when the camera started to roll. I learned so much from there and I do appreciate it. But, so much to learn and feels like not enough time. :thumbup

from fb Southwest Florida Eagle Cam tramite CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

Ozzie is currently standing and perching in his cage. Blood results indicate a blood infection so he is currently receiving strong antibiotics. Test results show no complications with his liver or kidneys. Below is a video of Ozzie receiving wound care yesterday. Thanks for your continued support!

Thanks for your updates/thoughts! Here's what Harriet and Slim/SA did this morning:

Ground Observations by Wskrsnwings: Tuesday, September 29, 2015
6:05-7:00 I am at the nest. Two eagles are perched in the nest tree. Harriet perches on the attic branch. The SA (sub adult) perches on an upper branch. Harriet is vocal with alert and warning calls. The SA responds back some.
7:00 Harriet resumes being vocal and turns on the attic branch.
7:04 Harriet flies quickly to the SE from the nest tree with a screaming vocal and the SA follows her.
7:06 The SA flies in from the back of the pasture to an upper branch of the nest tree and vocalizes on landing. The SA is looking around.
7:18-7:30 The SA flies SW toward the cell tower and an adult eagle flying to the cell tower. The adult lands on the tower and the SA turns back toward the trees near the cell tower and lands in one. Harriet is vocalizing in that stand of trees in another tree as the SA lands. She vocalizes, screaming, and makes a bee-line to the area the SA flew to and lands in a tree next to him. She is vocalizing "heads up" and The SA is vocalizing also.
7:30-7:55 Both remain in the same trees. The adult in the cell tower is still there and is quiet. Harriet vocalizes, preens and watches the area and the SA. The SA preens briefly and watches the area. Harriet vocalizes long and loud at times. The SA responds once.
7:55 I am headed home. The rains have started. Be safe Harriet, heal well Ozzie and return soon M15.

Sounds good! I don't think they would say that if they didn't honestly BELIEVE it. And, "Perching" is GOOD!

Today's MOVIE: (wskrsnwings) http://bit.ly/1GfieQT https://youtu.be/v0ga3W2nEqU Early Departure~Harriet Watches Away From The Nest 09-29-15 The sub adult is in the nest tree again this AM. Harriet vocalizes often. Harriet "screams" and flies from the nest only to return within sight of the nest pasture. The sub adult finds her there. Harriet flies at them but does not flush them out. The rains start and I head home. Be safe Harriet, heal well Ozzie and return soon M15.

I am so sorry to post this...
Thinking of you SWINWK.

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ozzie, the bald eagle, co-star of the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam. Ozzie passed away last night at CROW due to complications from his recent injuries that included multiple severe lacerations and a broken toe in each foot. Ozzie was brought to CROW for a second time on Sunday, September 27, after he was found weak and injured in a North Fort Myers backyard

So sad for all of us.... Oz gave us so much pleasure and taught us so much. He truly was a character.
So sad for you, Swinwk.
