from CROW's FB page:
approx. 10:50am
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ozzie, the bald eagle, co-star of the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam. Ozzie passed away last night at CROW due to complications from his recent injuries that included multiple severe lacerations and a broken toe in each foot. Ozzie was brought to CROW for a second time on Sunday, September 27, after he was found weak and injured in a North Fort Myers backyard. He arrived at CROW late at night in critical condition, unable to stand and fighting septicemia (a bacterial blood infection). It is highly likely these injuries were sustained from a fight with another bald eagle near the nest that was documented on the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam Facebook page. It was also reported that he had been entangled in barbwire.

A necropsy will be performed on Ozzie at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) at The University of Georgia and we will share those results with you when they become available. We would like to thank everyone for their support and unwavering belief in CROW during Ozzie’s rehabilitation and recent stay. Your endless words of encouragement carried the CROW staff through challenging times.

also a great picture of Oz:

Here you will understand how they came up with at least 30 as Ozzie's age as it takes 5 years to reach maturity. This would mean Harriet is also around this age. The report of Ozzie's death from news-press.com:

I , along with every9one here , am very sad tonight. It has been quite a year. WE have lost so many that we hold dear to our hearts.

But , I must say, I am so glad he was found , as he truly would not have made it on his own. He was loved to the end and treated with dignity and respect that he so deserved.

We are never prepared for this day, even though we all know it will eventually come. I am truly grateful to CROW, and I am so happy he got to fly with Harriet and roost with her one more day.

But I have read everything that Wskrnsnwings has written and we know the love she has for pair and know that her heart must be heavy .

But I am putting in these comments and observations she has wisely made and hope that everyone remembers all the great and wonderful times that we have shared at this site but also remember these words

comments by WSkrsnwings

"Our eagles live free and for the goal of propagating their species. A wise woman told me today that watching eagles live their lives makes their successes that much sweeter and brings home how fragile life can be."

"The ways of eagles continue to unfold before our eyes. May we observe and learn and not judge or predict."

So Fly free Ozzie and watch over your nest. Keep Harriet safe as she will continue on a new journey. YOu have taught all so much. :5val: with love , Bev

Thanks everyone.
That Blue Moon is amazing, unbelievable, isn't it?

(When I read Dee's blog, and saw how quiet and calm Ozzie was sitting on the porch, during the rescue, in the car on the drive to CROW. Wildlife can hide their injuries well. Oz was very, very sick - much worse than anyone, (even the people who cared for him at CROW) imagined. Personally, maybe this is why his loss was such a shock to me...
I read that Ozzie fathered between 10 - 20 eaglets that we know of during his lifetime (depending on whether he was the eagle in the "old nest tree across the street.').

I am very saddened with the loss of Ozzie. :sorrow: I keep thinking that at least he was able to spend a little time with Harriet before he left us. :sum7:

I have given this a lot of thought and decided to share my final impressions of Ozzie:

Ozzie lived his life large and died large. In between, Ozzie perpetuated his lineage with wonderful genes, sending many a healthy and hardy chick into the sky. Yes, I will miss him but I think he went out in a blaze of glory defending his territory. And at 30, oh my heavens! What a long productive life he lived!

Thanks Gigi, I agree with you! The cams are up, but no eagles in sight.
