Jess and Jade were the nesting pair in late December, 2018. Originally posted by CherylSome Canton nest history compliments of Matrix Some History of Canton Peregrine's:ODNR noted peregrine falcon's in downtown Canton Ohio in the late 1990's. In 2003 Maverick (B/G R/R, son of Bandit and Katie-Columbus, Ohio) was positively identified as the resident male. The then unbanded female, (later caught and given a USFW band and named Priscilla) reigned until 2009 when Priscilla fell ill and died en route to vet, leaving Maverick to raise the three eyases alone. He succeded and two of those are: Diamond-resident female at Niagra Falls, and McKinley-resident tiercel at Akron, Ohio)
In 2010, Maverick was nesting with now resident female-Mystic (B/G S/22) his granddaughter. They were succesfull in 2010 and 2011 in raising 7 total eyas's...Two of which are currently residents at site's in Canada (Midnight) and Indiana (Moxie). (Matrix was briefly at Columbus in 2011)
Just after the new year of 2012, Maverick was found deceased. ODNR official noted he appeared to have had a collision with a building and run over by a vehicle. Locals noted territorial battle's going on, with three falcons, in the days before Maverick being found deceased, and speculated that he died during a battle. He was 12 years old and had raised 30 offspring during his reign at Canton. His grandson JoJo, (B/R 30/B) was positivley identified as Maverick's successor. However, when the new live camera was installed in 2012, JoJo was last seen on cam March 28th 2012. During the next night, Mystic laid her first egg and the following morning a unbanded sub-adult male's image was caught in the nestbox with Mystic.
Mystic proceeded to lay a clutch of 4, and the subadult male, dubbed Maurice by falcon watcher Cheryl, stepped up and fed Mystic during the incubation as best he could. It worked, and all four hatched.
38/U (female) Lula 45/M (male) Bravery 28/D (male) Atticus 39/U (female) Peenie Mystic then did most of the work as the young male Maurice continued to battle his youth and many funny times were observed as he learned "the ropes".
All four fledged, with two being rescued by Chad and Chris Saladin, and all were observed flying and learning to hunt till dispersal in late summer.
Maurice has been recently observed, after a short hiatus, and now in his glorious full adult plumage, with Mystic, at the Chase Tower, just below the nestbox......Pictures, compliments of CherylCanton's pair Mystic Maurice Pictures compliments of MatrixThe Chase Building....Nestbox and cam is near the top left in the pic.
