Aloha and Falcao's chicks were ringed today. There was a short break in the bad weather and so it was decided to ring them. Here's a photo of the two at the beginning. I think the one on the left thinks "What do you want with me?" and the other has a much more falcon look thinking, "If I were bigger, I'd sort you out!" I think you can see this in almost all the photos in the slideshow (Thanks Passera  ) below:

http://www.slide.com/r/ztDUIJ1S3D8Fftub ... w=original

They're two very healthy looking chicks though. Here are the details:

EOLO (full crop)
Ring no. 2236
Weight: 635 gm
Wing: 166 mm

TIBER
Ring no. 2237
Weight: 612 gm
Wing: 160 mm

Both hatched on 13 April so are now 3 weeks old.

All the chicks from the four Rome PF nests have now been ringed and it's been noted that the inner-city chicks seem to be heavier. This is probably for dietary reasons - they're mainly fed on pigeon with a variation of swifts and some other birds. The 'suburban' nests have a diet mainly of starling with swifts and other birds being the variant. Nevertheless, they all appear very healthy

Unfortunately, there's some bad news Appio and Vergine's nest. Some of you had noticed that two were "missing". A check was made today and two chicks were found on the ground; one, a female, was dead and the other was fed and then returned to the nest.
Chicks do die unexpectedly - one has died at De Mortel this year and one at Derby has died today but it's something that we can never get used to :sosad .
We would be very grateful if, until the chicks fledge definitively, you advise me instantly if you notice that one is missing when you look at the cam. I can then pass the message on and we can take the necessary action.

Oh no. I am so sorry to hear such terrible news. I could not see them all, but just thought they were out of camera range or even fledged.

This is such sad news...

Are they supplementing the food at this box--looks like quail laying on the ledge, but I'm not seeing the chicks rushing for it so they must not be hungry.

OK, now I see from ljames' pic that somebody is showing an interest!

I don't think they are eating it though.

Pigeon and quail were left on the ledge, probably to try and help the chick settle back after its (mis)adventure :? . Today, one has stayed very firmly in the nest!

That's interesting, Warbler. Last year at Alcoa one of the kids took a premature flight (& he mostly had white feathers at the time, so he wasn't as developed as these kids) & when he got back to the box on his own 10 days later, he stayed in the box, too!

The little ones in Appio and Vergine's nest are keeping us on our toes. One has fallen off the ledge again :-( . She's being recovered and I'll give you more info later. :?
