Can someone explain this? I keep refreshing same color. Yesterday it was white now thisI don't think its the cam because nothing else is weird. I'm going to try and see if this is coal use or what.

You are right, this is WEIRD! You know, I noticed that the Phoenix chick also was grey instead of bright white.

OK so I went to the facebook page today, and got a answer kind of. Stay tuned for more info.

Jannice Mull Is the factory use coal by chance?

Briess Malt & Ingredients Co.
Jannice Mull, thank you for your comment and concern. We do not use coal at our facility, as we are a grain, malting, and ingredients company. I reached out to falcon expert Greg Septon, of the Peregrine Falcon recovery effort in Wisconsin, and he noted this is not something he has seen before but does not feel it is coal or environmentally related, as it would be all over the adults as well. One theory is, while Greg has never seen it in peregrines, there are melanistic forms of various bird species, so perhaps a recessive gene variant is the cause? Greg is reaching out to Dr. Steve Sherrod, falcon breeder and researcher, who may be able to shed some further light on this. Again, thank you for your concern and feedback. - Mercedes Hemmer

Interesting. I am glad Greg is involved and look forward to hearing more about what he might find out. Thanks for checking into this.

Many thanks kitten for the info/news.

Very interesting and hope Greg can shed some light on this.
First chick (and the others?) were white when they hatched.

So, let me get this straight. The chicks hatched white, then suddenly turned gray. Mom's feet were yellow, and then in the capture of her feeding they turned black/gray.

I am still going with coal dust, or maybe ash from something burned. Perhaps they do not have something at the site that is coal, but mom had to be in something with ash or coal. Look at her feet in the picture of the feeding.

I just caught the tail end of a feed. Mom's feet are very gray also. Her breast is taking on gray too. I think this is some kind of soot or something. Probably off prey. Mom incubates/broods kids and the dust, or whatever is getting on the kids.

And, I'm sure they are not hunting directly above the mill, so it might be from miles away....

ETA: Maybe their prey is nesting in some kind of chimney....

I also thought of contamination of their prey by soot. Could it be from the wildfires up north? (Alberta-Canada comes to mind).
