Port Washington update
By Greg Septon, peregrine falcon manager

I spent a fair amount of time Saturday watching the Port Washington Generating Station (PWGS) webcam and have not identified Indy Froona (b/g) *V/*Y for some time now. I was able to watch the female in the nest box for nearly 2 hours. As luck would have it, she was perched on her right leg and her left leg (the one with the color ID band) was tucked up out of view in her feathers. She was obviously quite content to simply sit and enjoy the warm sun and watch people walking along the beach beneath her. Then, she finally started to lower her left leg but instead of standing on it to give me a look at the band, she bolted and flew out over the beach.

In the blink of an eye, there suddenly were two adult peregrines back in the nest box -- they displayed to each other for all of 5 seconds, and then the female turned sideways, and I saw her left leg band. She was preoccupied, so I was able to zoom in without spooking her, and there it was: black/red (b/r) 84/X. This is a new female, and her name is Brinn. And, she's not from these parts. Brinn was produced in 2012 on Gold Hoist cliff at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota, which on Google Earth measures out at a distance of approximately 315 miles.

I don't know if Indy Froona has now been displaced or if Brinn will be moving on. It's early, and time will tell -- and I'll keep watching.

OH NO!!

OK, Indy Froona, you better get back up there and defend your box!!

Ya know, Greg just needs to give one of us the controls..All we've been doing the past several days is attempt to read bands everywhere. What's a few more nests!!!

:sham3: you take a couple I'll take a couple and we'll let Greg have the rest.
I just hope it works out here like it did at oak Creek. To many hearts will break if not.

Sounds good to me, KF!!

New Blog update:

    Oak Creek:

This image from Oak Creek Power Plant was captured yesterday and shows the adult pair of falcons displaying in the nest box. The male's band appears to indicate that Scott (b/g) M/Y may be back. On March 9, an adult male at this location was identified as Matt (b/g) 38/N. The male identified in this image had the letter M in the top portion of his band. If this is indeed Scott, this would be his ninth year at this site.

    Milwaukee

This pair appeared for just a short time yesterday. Both may be new. The male that nested here last year was Polyo (b/g) E/65, with a black/green band. This new male's band is black/red, so we appear to have an entirely new pair -- at least for now.

Please see his blog for the pics he posted..

Tips still being sought in shooting of endangered peregrine falcon
Authorities are searching for more leads in the shooting of Madame X, a peregrine falcon that nested at our Milwaukee County Power Plant. Madame X was found badly injured on Feb. 27 and taken to the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WRC). X-rays revealed she had several shotgun pellets lodged in her body and also suffered a broken coracoid (collar bone).

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. The Humane Society of the United States and the Global Conservation Group have each offered $5,000.

Since the reward was announced, authorities have received tips but not enough to make an arrest. If you have any information, you’re asked to call West Allis Crime Stoppers at: 414-476-CASH (2274). Callers may request confidentiality.

Madame X was found at 2 p.m. on Feb. 27 in a yard outside the Cocktails and Dreams tavern at 55th and Grant in West Allis. Madame X has been receiving around the clock care at the WRC. The We Energies Foundation contributed $2,500 to her recovery. Caregivers at the WRC remain impressed with Madame X’s progress. Her injuries may prevent her from flying again, but if she cannot be released in the wild, we’re optimistic she can still live a long and healthy live educating others about the importance of protecting peregrine falcons.

Peregrine falcons are listed as an endangered species in Wisconsin. They also are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act. Shooting a peregrine falcon is a serious crime, punishable by jail time and fines.

We Energies has been involved in Wisconsin’s peregrine falcon recovery effort since the early 1990s. We sponsored the release of captive-produced peregrines and then installed nest boxes at six power plant sites. To date, nearly 200 peregrines have been produced at our facilities. Soon, you’ll be able to watch this season’s nesting activity via live webcams on our peregrine falcon page.

Thanks so much for that link, DEF..

No new blog updates from Greg so who knows if its Brinn or IndyFroona...which certainly does make for nail biting times for the indy fans. As precious as Brinn is, I do hope that IndyFroona has regained her box.

This is Oak Creek...maybe checking for bands? I certainly do hope that Eclipse was able to hold the box.

I'm also hoping they are checking for eggs. We had some march layers last year.

Valley...looks like it was laid between 5 and 6 on 3/29...

I wonder who the male is?...gosh, I hope there is one...I read somewhere that sperm can stay viable for 7-10 days...

I wonder who else has eggs...sure wish they would move the cams to the boxes!!!

Thanks for the pic, KF...

New Update from Greg:

Brewers opening day isn’t the only sign of spring; we have our first peregrine falcon egg of the season. The web camera inside the nest box at our Valley Power Plant captured the image at right.

This is especially good news after the resident adult male from this site, Swede, was found dead over the winter. Swede was 15 years old and had been a mainstay at Valley Power Plant for several nesting seasons. With his loss, there was concern this nest site would be in jeopardy. But it appears the resident female, Maya, may have found a new mate. Or, this could be a new pair altogether. Peregrine Manager Greg Septon will be keeping a close eye on this site to get both adults’ band numbers.

Meanwhile, we’re waiting for eggs to appear at our five other nest box sites -- Oak Creek, Pleasant Prairie, Wauwatosa, Port Washington and Marquette, Mich. As soon as nesting activity is in full swing, we’ll again be launching our live video stream at http://www.we-energies.com/falcons. Stay tuned!

I'm really surprised that nobody else has eggs...I think Pleasant Praire and Oak Creek had eggs by now.

You know these cams are a lot clearer, but I really liked the views from outside the box. At least we got to see if there were eggs or not.
