Posted on FB (10:00am approx.):

"What is the temperature there? The egg has been exposed for a couple of hours during the night. I started watching at 3.30 am local time and three hours later still was uncovered, no eagle anywhere near.
And now, 9.45 am local time, it again is uncovered and it is not in nice grassy cup but on a bed of snow. Quite unusual behaviour for eagles I think."

Current temp 37F - tonight lows 31F; don't know what it was last night when the egg was exposed.
Wonder what's going on there? Wonder if they're having trouble finding food (water frozen???); but there is usually a lot of wildlife around (mallards, etc.)...????

Currently 38 F in that region...

We see peregrines leave eggs unattended all the time, even in cold weather. But, what is too cold for an eagle egg? Very uncharacteristic for eagles... :girlcrazy:

I've checked frequently too, Beth and nest has been empty- something is definitely going on around there; intruders maybe. Someone somewhere said that they saw 2 eagles on the osprey platform and 2 eagles on the nest at the same time a few days ago. (of course, I can't remember where I saw that!)

FB said that there are a lot of eagles at the refuge - they have resident eagles and eagles that visit from the north during their migration. The migrating eagles leave when it's time for them to head north to nest. Who knows what's happening with the crazy weather this year...

just my 2 cents worth. yesterday we saw both eagles frequently. there could be some unwanteds in the area. I tend not to worry about first eggs. My hair would be grayer and need a lot more hair dye, if I did. they know what they are doing and let us just hope there are 2 and if not, at least it is not a chick.

I am trying to remember how long Harriet stayed off at times. will check. I Just remember Bonnie the owl a few years ago, and no one thought the egg would hatch becasue of length of time she was off due to intruder. and it was very cold there at the time.

so I think cautious optimism is the best :loveheart:

Hi Bev...
It sure is cold at Blackwater and I think the
nest bowl doesn't look right. Time will
tell if we have a 2nd egg.

have cam on video now.

she is back at 16:50. do not know when she came in

they did do work on nest, brought in green sprigs and nesting material, built up sides a bit. It is hard to keep tack of this sort of thing becasue of refresh, but at times you would see new greenery in and new hay, or straw. then you would see one or both with a twig in mouth.

so we will see i guess. :loveheart:

I have a small video of some scapes

mom left at 17:16 and an eagle came in at17:33. Then another one came to nest so mom and dad have both been there.
At 19:56 mom still on nest. I do not know if food brought in or not.

in first slide it looks like possible food in front of eagle ??
