According to mod Tomp, (from the Florida wildlife experts) Eagles in the area can lay until March!
And, we'll still be watching and waiting! :flirty:

Great article and video, Thanks!

Mod posted this link originally posted by rlukei in 2010 on the size of eagle eggs:

A mod reported in the last week or 2 ... they have the rails 4 feet high on the nest ... I doubted them initially, but after seeing the rails from the perspective this morning ... they may be correct ... chatter commented the eaglets will need a trampoline to get out of there ... :teehee:

:suchdrama: I don't know if this nest is ever going to get any peace. An intruder (owl or eagle) has been in the area and even flew over the nest. M15 pursued the intruder and returned after approximately 10 minutes to the nest tree and Harriet.

Edit: found a video of event by Uta:

Intruder enters from right top screen near beginning of video.

I know what you mean SWINWK... I did some checking and the latest she laid her first egg since the cam has operated was November 26. But she has a new mate and apparently a new schedule.

From the Florida Wildlife Commission:
http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/manag ... n/biology/
Bald eagles in Florida begin building a nest or start gathering materials for a nest in late September or early October. The nesting season is prolonged. Eagles begin laying eggs as early as October or as late as April (nests that are built later in the season are mostly renesting attempts or nest built after the first attempt fails, Millsap et al. 2004). For purposes of the FWC Bald Eagle Management Plan, the bald eagle nesting season is defined as the period from October 1 through May 15. Nest sites tend to be built near the edges of eagle habitats (McEwan and Hirth 1980) such as in a living tree that offers a view of the surrounding area and that can support the eagle's often sizeable nest.

I don't know whether this information makes me feel any better or not. They are definitely mating a lot (2+ times daily visible on cam) but the nest doesn't look very soft and fluffy yet... I guess time will tell - but it's hard to be patient! :imbored:

Here's a video from approx. 11:15am when H and M15 came to the nest, followed by an intruder flying above. Look closely at the messy feathers near where Harriet's brood patch would be (or am I hallucinating?).

Here's a picture of another eagle's brood patch:

I am not as concerned as other I guess.

there have been other eagles in area, and maybe that immature is still around.

AS I have said earlier, new young male, new habits, and the season started off with Oz back for a day, . a youngster at site, M15 missing for a few weeks.
Bonds just do not form immediately.

M15 is doing what he should and to see how far he has come is just a credit to Harriet. The nest is looking so much better, He just has a different choice of soft nest materials.

I say this becasue I remember the year Chase ( falcon) came to Edmonton, Radisson had to really work with him. It was hilarious to see how he would slide off her in failed mating attempts. and then when he got it right , we were cheering form below( I am sure passersby thought we were nuts) LOL I remember her scolding him and chasing him to sit on eggs or stay at nest, or to mate. That is why we called him Chase. All th8ings changed at our site .

So it is late for Oz and Harriet, but not for M15 and Harriet. All has changed. I admire Wskerwings take on it all. She was a champion of Oz and Harriet but can see things for what they will become.

So I am optimistic there will be an egg but it is in natures hands, :loveheart2: and fingers crossed

Thank you for your reassuring words, Bev. M15 and Harriet sure have had their distractions and I am sure they are on their own schedule!
Loved you comment about "sliding off"! :teehee:

I am not as concerned as other I guess.

Bev, I hope you understand that I have not made up my mind that she will not lay an egg. But, I would be lying if I said I was not concerned. In reality, we do not know for sure when the last date of her 1st eggs come as we have not seen the 20 something seasons before the installation of the cams. Also, I do not believe the "delay" is due to her new, young, buck. And bonbon let's hope she doesn't wait until March or April as poor M15 would be petered out by then. You see I believe whatever the reason is attributable to her. I noticed a couple of comments from chat (one who actually lives there) about the weather remaining hot and humid this long into November (almost 90F) and has just started cooling some as their normal fall weather over last couple of days. Also, someone mentioned other eagle nests in the area do not have eggs as yet. The mod agreed about the heat. Other than her age (which I hope it is not) I see this as more plausible as something is making this year different for all the eagles. I also believe this is one of the finest nests I have ever seen here and I attribute that to M15.
