From NEFL

Early Friday – February 10, 2017 – The American Eagle Foundation (AEF) plans to retrieve the eaglet “Peace” the from its wild nest in Northeast Florida.

On February 6, 2017, AEF NEFL Remote Camera Operators alerted AEF officials Al Cecere and Gretchen Butler about the balance problems the 7 week old eaglet was exhibiting. After closely monitoring the eaglet via live streaming nest cams for hours, we noticed black monofilament (commonly used for fishing) wrapped around the left foot, including the hallux. Shortly after the discovery of the fishing line, the female parent “Juliet” appeared to be pulling and tugging on a clump of moss while going after a piece of food, and it is believed that the parent had removed the line from the eaglet’s foot.

Once the fishing line was identified, AEF immediately began talking to USFWS and making plans to rescue “Peace.” We were beyond excited that this problem seemed to have been resolved without the need for human intervention which is rather rare when fishing line enters a nest. So, thereafter, our plans were to continue to monitor the eaglet, but then a storm rolled through the area knocking power out for almost 24 hours. The electricity was restored on February 8, at which time it was immediately noticed that “Peace” was still having significant balance problems.

A decision was made on the evening of February 8 to continue plans for the rescue, which will hopefully take place early in the morning on February 10, 2017 – at which time our cams will be taken offline.

“Peace” will be taken to the Audubon Raptor Center for a complete medical checkup and assessment.

The cam is currently off line!!

Oh my!! Thanks SGB. I hope Peace checks out OK and they remove that line from the nest. Fishing line has been such a problem at multiple nests. More should be done to publicize its dangers to fisherman. :gaaaaah:

From Eagleholic: :hapdance:
"Update on the rescue of eaglet “Peace” from the AEF NEFL nest: Rescue this morning was successful and both Peace and Hope were unharmed. Peace was taken to vet clinic for radiograph and blood tests. Nothing serious was detected upon examination on-site by Al Cecere and Audubon vet technician, Sam. Updates will be posted. (pic shows sibling eaglet “Hope” after the rescue looking active and relaxed – which is always good news after a visit to the nest by humans)"

It sounds like nothing serious was found on initial exam, but they are not releasing Peace just yet. Praying that all is well. There was no fishing line found in the nest and from what I read, it does not appear that Hope was fed anytime after the rescue, but the parents were circling overhead. Hopefully, Romeo and Juliet will bring Hope a big breakfast tomorrow morning. Below is a 4:59 pm post from chat taken from the American Eagle Foundation cam website about Peace's status:

From Gretchen in a post on Facebook, "Update: Following a visit to the vet for radiographs and blood work this afternoon, it was determined by the vet and Audubon Supervisor, Diana Flint, that Peace should spend some time at Audubon Center for Birds of Prey for further testing and observation. We love our Peace! "

I have been watching Hope and he seems to be comfortable not sharing! :teehee: That won't last long!

Juliet is in the nest with Hope. She just brought in a nice catfish, but is not feeding. The two are standing side-by-side. Earlier, Hope was cooling herself with open wings - quite a sight. Below is the latest on Peace from the American Eagle Foundation cam website chat. So far, so good.

Feb 11 2017, 2:25 PM
ste_AEF: About Peace: This is the latest update from Audubon. Peace weighed in at 5.74 pounds, a good weight for a small male of 7 weeks. That is not positive confirmation that Peace is a male, because the lab info has not come back. However, physical observation by experts leans in that direction. Both talons are working normally. Radiograph revealed no abnormalities or broken bones. Muscles appear normal and feel normal. No lead poisoning! (we did get results on that). Waiting for other lab reports .

2:14 pm - Hope in quite a pose. The moderator said she was cooling herself, but the way she was facing the sun and occasionally cocked her head back, looked like sunning. I've never seen this before.

2:40 pm - Juliet spent some quality time in the nest with Hope this afternoon.

Juliet is once again spending time in the nest with Hope...such a good mom. Romeo has not been seen much. Food deliveries have been by mom, but they say that "Romeo has been seen on-site perched and flying about the nest likely looking for Peace. His reaction is not abnormal, and he will soon return to the nest, and they will be fine." These are such amazing parents. They clearly recognize that one of their babies is missing. Romeo did appear in the nest this morning for a brief moment. Waiting for an update on Peace.

An update this morning about Peace indicates a possible right leg injury. They are still waiting on some blood work. The eaglet is being given pain meds and any needed physical therapy to help improve balance. There's a picture of Peace on Facebook with info. Below is info taken from chat on the American Eagle Foundation cam website:

Feb 13 2017, 10:33 AM
gretchen_AEF: Our latest update on Peace from Saturday: Peace weighed in at 5.74 pounds. We believe Peace to be a small male with good weight for a 7 wk eaglet. Blood work has been done and sent, and the gender will be confirmed in approximately one week. We do already have some results and blood test proved no lead and CBC is normal. Peace's ears indicated no blood present and checked out fine. The radiographs were perfect. Muscles were felt and appeared good. Peace could move both feet in a normal fashion as well as open talons. At this point there appears to be a possible injury to the right leg, and we are waiting on additional results from blood work conducted. Otherwise there appears to be no other problems. Updates will be posted as we receive them. Thank you for all your well wishes.

I understand Juliet brought in a turtle to the nest today. :girlcrazy:

:popc: Wow...Hope is self-feeding so well. Love these videos...thanks Freddie!

Here's an update on Peace from yesterday. No other news about the eaglet's balance or pending lab tests.

AEF-NEFL UPDATE ON PEACE today from vet technician at Audubon: Peace is eating more on own at night but still hand feeding as well. We've been feeding a variety of food including fish, rodents, and chicken. He's gained some weight from 5.74 lbs when first admitted, to now a little over 6 lbs.
