He did remarkably well for his first time--I suspect he has had practice.

Were you around the time DC (Rochester) fed his one and only chick for the first time. The chick had blood from the prey from head to talens. Beauty was horrifed when she returned! He got much better at it. That wasn't the end of it--apparently he decided that he was going to feed the chicks part of the time or he wasn't going to leave the food! He and Beauty apparently came to an understanding that he could feed them part of the time. He continued to entertain us during his reign of many years!
