We've all been concerned about Dad Sidney. Is this a neck wound? Is it fishing line? It is difficult to identify these problems from a distance. With a wound, sometimes all you see is an indentation or break in the feathers.

To read more about avian wounds (and fishing line injuries), please see my post in the rehab thread here:

Well it is all set for Monday. I am not sure if a rescue is needed as Pa looks good but at least they will be able to get a good look to assess.

A few picutres from today.

they have had snow here and today the wind is strong and you could see snow in the wind . they have been busy nestorating and mom and dad have been eating at the nest.

these are of Ma

I was able to watch for about an hour and a half this morn. The team missed the ferry and were to arrive around 11 am. The pair were in the nest 45 minutes prior and were very alert, looking around, standing tall and staring out. It was like they knew someone was approaching. Pa left. Ma stayed alert and then left. I heard a car horn and what I think might have been alarm calls from far away. So, I'm assuming the team has arrived.

Edit: Checked back in and Pa is back in the nest - just before 1pm, nest time

I sure hope they could observe Pa well enough and that he has no line around his neck.

I found my way to the Hancock Forum. This just posted by Gemini, under the Sidney Nest Discussion Forum.

"Pa was very clever, he outsmarted everyone, he took the bait and didn't get caught!

David said they got a good look at him through the 50x scope but nothing \was revealed that they hadn't already seen in the photos taken by our ground crew.

Pa flew around a couple of times with the bait before settling down to dine on it. David said he is one strong eagle and he ate vigorously!

The Rescue team is going to regroup and decide what to do now. Try again tomorrow or let things lie. He will let us know later."

That's great video Pat. I always enjoy your recordings. I was just reading Ohio Division of Wildlife's Life History Notes, Bald Eagle. Here's an interesting paragraph.

"Ohio has the distinction of being the home of the largest bald eagle nest on record. Referred to as the “Great Nest,” it was located in Vermilion and was measured at 12 feet in height, 8 1/2 feet across and it weighed two tons! The nest was 80 feet up in the tree, which is within the normal placement range of 50 to 100 feet above ground. This nest was used continuously by different pairs of eagles for over 35 years. It was destroyed during a storm in 1925."

This posted today, Handcock Wildlife Forum, Sidney Nest Discussion topic. posted by MayLine,

"there are no further plans to capture Pa, according to elle; DavidH went home last evening, also according to elle. Not sure if she posted that on this particular thread, however. I don't think she would mind me quoting one sentence: "And I think it is safe to say, unless Pa shows definite signs that he is in serious trouble, all plans for a capture have been abandoned."

Harry took photos yesterday and thought Pa looked extremely strong, especially when he broke off this branch yesterday afternoon"

The picture is a good one, on page 97, 1/2 way down the page!

WOW...that branch is huge...

Well, I'm far from being an expert, but I think that's the right decision at this stage of the game. I do hope they have a back-up plan in place in case he looks like he's in distress and needs help.
