apparently a bunch of idiots threw snowballs at the owl, and she flew off around 2 pm pacific time, abandoning 5 eggs.

I will say wow 5 eggs, highly unusual

female just came back... after about 4 hours, hopefully the eggs are still viable but it seems like an awfully long time. She's been named ophelia

OK...just finished "chatting" to the nice person at the school. They think the eggs are intact...they are gonna try and get the Dept. Of wildlife out there to talk with the kids...fingers crossed that things will be ok...

That last picture of the eggs must have a bad reflection, remnants of the snowball or too much dirt. I looked at the eggs at 4 p.m. local time and they were all intact.

Mama returned to the nest at 6:05 p.m. just before the cam went dark for the night.

Hi all!

That pictures looks HORRIBLE! Fortunately (or unfortunately!), we have a really cheap camera!

There is a lot going on in that picture. First there are indeed 5 eggs! I counted them myself. 3 in the front, 2 in the back. The white clump to the left of the eggs is what remains of the snowball. There are about 4 or 5 feathers in front of the eggs, and the eggs are FILTHY from the mud that has become her nest! Last week before we had the came set up, she was covered up to her eyes in snow. Poor Ophelia (that is the name the teacher gave her!) looked miserable.

I was on the cam when she flew back in! Just minutes before we had a rescue attempt starting to occur. One of our staff has an incubator and our custodian was going to go get the eggs out of the nest! We saw her come back and quickly called the school!

Hopefully, the eggs survived the 4 hour absence of mom. The temp was in the low 40s.

By the way, name's Chad! Nice to see you all take an interest in our Ophelia!

A little more information:

News of the owl has spread to the kids. Several classes in the school are watching her, as well as at least 3 other schools that we are aware of!

We hope all is well in the nest and students and bird watchers around the world will get to see :egghatch: in the next few weeks!

Thanks to skygirlblue for all the advice, help, and talking me off the ledge (so to speak) the past 2 days!

Chad

:hi: oms308/Chad and gbdfawoman - Welcome to BCAW!!

Thank you for your posts on the situation-those kids :x (hope they find them) should have to
do community work for the school/wildlife and have a good sit-down
heart-to-heart talk.

Please let us know if we can help in any way :sham3:

Just a short peekaboo
and
Oh so happy she, Ophelia, came back :flirty:
Was worried, but had to go to sleep.
:nicetomeet: Thanks Chad and gbdfawoman for your replies here.
Wish education and protection will work fine in the end.
Also that the eggs are still okay.

I will come back in my evening and watch again

Calm day for her. We are in the process of blocking off that side of the building from student traffic. Monday we introduce her to the students. Hopefully this is not a mistake.
