The Gentoos are the most widely distributed of all penguin species, although far from the most numerous.
In 2008, their total numbers were estimated at 250,000. I am sure that the number is lower by now. Their current status is "near-threatened", and it will not be very long before they are classified as threatened.

During the twentieth century, almost all penguin species experienced a drop in population of 90%, which was entirely due to human activities.
