Just checked again, and they have shut down the discussion forum, too many comments and contraversy. Belle still crying out. I know both flew towards the river together, so hopefully it was Liberty with her, but am confused why neither of them are bringing food to the nest then. And why is she crying out so? And is that who she IS fighting with, or another eagle intruder? I dont know anything now, except that I too feel sick over this.

P.S. Could the immature male be following her? that would explain the cries.

Well, we can only hope that Randy's observations are accurate. I don't know eagles that well, but I can't imagine that Belle would allow an intruder to sit in a tree near her. Maybe what we are interpreting as cries are really just communications to Lib, similar to when we here the owls (especially the GHO's) call out while they are sitting on the nest. I'm sure they are very stressed out and on edge after having dealt with the intruder today. I for one will feel better when I see both on the nest at the same time...

Greencashew is Peggy Jean & CLC. They record everything! :)

I can still hear her whining. I don't know what to think at this point but I'm afraid for them. If this is Belle then my thought is that the intruder eagle was female as well - and maybe Lib is just staying away waiting for them to settle it. I don't think a male will engage a female in battle. I'm sure Belle would run her right off if she didn't have a hatch today. Just plain bad timing.

At 2:55 am nest time, she woke up and began the soft vocalizations. She stood up and I saw the eaglet. It was bobbing it's head about. She has quieted back down with her head tucked under her wing.

Belle checked on the eaglet this am, 7:30 est, and at 8am est left nest. Has repeatedly been softly crying all am.

P.S. 8:16am Belle returned, and immediately chased someone off, could not see who.

It has been peaceful during the time I have been watching cam (partly at night and at morning) - no other eagles, or voices, except what Belle has made. Today she maybe has called for Lib

Image

And just Belle stood up, ... Image

Now Belle left and the eaglet is alone at the nest, hope she brings food to the nest.

Belle came back, alert now... goes sitting on the egg..

I must have opened the cam where Annie described Belle leaving the nest.

Baby looks strong...She returned, no food..

In this video, I'm not sure if she is reacting to yesterday's intruder or not.

She does appear to have an injury to her "nose" area, but it doesn't look like its bothering her. She is currently fluffing the nest and periodically calls out. She appears calm...eventually she's gonna have to feed herself and this baby..no other eagle on cam...so, I'm a little concerned.

I've been watching all morning. Belle is still making a lot of noise, no sign of Lib and no food. Yuck. There does seem to be another eagle in the area making noise.

I just read the posts at the blog not sounding good tho

Mema Jo said...
Comment in an email from Randy this morning ***********
I think the "dirty bird" theory that TJ wrote about on Steve's blog
yesterday could be right. I got a good look at the intruder this morning and she does have other spots of black showing under her white head feathers. I would concur with TJ that the intruder might be a young female that has recently come into adult plumage and is looking for nesting
territory.
Randy

Thanks for the updates and pictures this morning. I've just finished reading 500 posts on the blog, and the latest of interest is someone knows someone who works at NCTC and said they saw an eagle hunting just south of the nest. They can't identify it, though.

Since I've watched this morning Belle has left the nest for a couple of short flights then back again.
