Their little circle gets tighter and tighter. While the little one does wait his turn a lot, he is fed some I know. :girlluv:

In fact, in this series, it was the little one that turned away first and then the big one, leaving the middle one to continue eating.

Such cute series of shots, both the line and the circle, ljames. The littlest one is getting bigger!

The biggest chick eating while the middle watched. Not sure what the little one was doing.

Yesterday (Saturday March 19) at 10:30 am I was on the dike road between Pool 3 and the Blackwater River, maybe a half mile south of the camera nest. An adult bald eagle lifted off Pool 3 with a big (3 lb.+) bronze channel catfish and flew with somewhat labored wingbeats . . . south, to a nest hidden in the pines along the river. So the eagle cam eaglets didn't get any. Their next door neighbors to the south did. I would have been pleased to catch that fish myself.

A half hour earlier and a few miles to the east I was watching a young golden eagle (less than a year old) kiting on wind deflected up off the edge of a woods, trying to hunt which was not easy since a young bald eagle the same age kept diving at him, forcing the golden to roll in the air to defend himself. Finally the golden eagle pulled his wings in and dove at a hidden impoundment, flushing a great egret (my first of the year) and chasing it for fifty feet or so before letting it go. But the bald eagle took up the chase, won by the egret who climbed in tight circles faster than the bald eagle could. The bald eagle gave up and the egret got out of Dodge.

I don't know why the golden eagle stopped chasing the egret. The eagle probably was hatched in northern Quebec last summer and never saw an egret before. The egret may not have seen a golden eagle before either, and hope it stays that way.

Wow Greg...what a wildlife watching bonanza! Thanks for posting your report. Blackwater is an amazing place, but I had no idea golden eagles were hanging out there too.

A few from northern Quebec and Labrador winter here. By keeping track of age class and plumage differences, I've counted between 4 and 7 every year since the mid-1990s.

A new Blackwater tradition is a flock of white pelicans every winter. Someone saw 19 together a couple of weeks ago.

White pelicans are really cool. At Pea Island Refuge in the Outer Banks, the numbers climb every winter. I think there were 50 or 60 this year. The birders are still excited to see this rare bird. I didn't realize they were even further north.
